FRFF Chapter 2
Aug. 3rd, 2003 10:21 amOn Thursday evening (last week at FRFF), I spent a good deal of the night shopping, which I continued on Friday morning. The vendors there all had really cool stuff to sell, and also the Green Party was there with really cheap stickers and buttons and such, of which I bought many. I bought a purple hippie dress, guatemalan yellow capri pants, purple silk harem pants (which Jeremy has worn way more than I have, but it's ok cause he looks sexy in girl clothes), a black and white hat, and I got my hair wrapped like it was a few years ago. Bitchin'.
I may be getting out of order here, but I believe the first concert we saw on Friday was the most wanted song swap. That featured the top three artists from last year's emerging artist showcase, which were Girlyman, We're About Nine, and Rachel Davis. Unfortunately, I don't have a recording of this set, although I did buy Girlyman's album, which rocks my world.
We're About Nine is a pretty good band, and I liked them, but not enough to buy a CD...though I would go to a concert if they came around here.
Rachel Davis was spectacular. She's this tiny little girl, probably my age or so, who sings without any other music backing her. Just her voice. Some songs she had a guitar or a banjo, but it was mostly just her. The song "Grandma's Hands" is the only one I can remember the title of, but I recommend giving it a listen. Her voice is amazingly powerful and beautiful at the same time. But unfortunately I don't have a recording of her shows.
Girlyman. I love Girlyman. Of all the CDs I bought last week, I've listened to theirs the most. Girlyman is a trio consisting of an Asian girl who may or may not be straight, a butch girl who has a very feminine singing voice, and a very flamboyant man. They say that if you mixed them all together, you'd get a girly man, which is how they arrived at their name.
Their music is fantastic. They take turns playing different instruments and singing lead. Nate plays a baritone guitar (like a bass, but with six strings and played more like a regular six-string). Their harmonies are brilliant. I can't say enough good things about this band. I believe I have a recording of them from something we saw later in the week, but I'll have to double check that. I can't really compare their music to another band...it's not that their sound is totally unique and that I've never heard anything like it...it's just that I can't think of anything like it that is as good. Their songs are all gender-unspecific, which is nice, too. Let's see, on their album they have songs about breaking up, a song about someone dying in a car crash, songs about bitchy lovers who suck, and a really amazing cover of George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord," among other things. This album comes with my highest recommendations.
So that takes us through Friday afternoon. More to come, including EFO, Arlo Guthrie, and Dar Williams. Peace.
