I can believe it happened, I just can't believe it happened. Arnold Schwarzenegger Governor of California. Flying shitmonkeys, Batman. Adam pointed out one good thing that will come of this: the Californian economy will continue sucking, and hopefully the Californians will realize that it A) isn't Gray Davis' fault and B) isn't their Governor's fault at all, those egocentric bastards. I mean the whole American economy is flailing right now, and they blame it on Gray Davis? Sorry, Cali's not *that* important in the grand scheme of things. They're not even going to have a team in the World Series this year.

So what happened at work yesterday, you ask?

Well, this lady (really good customer of ours) had brought in her recently deceased mother's ring to have prongs retipped. It was a job we couldn't do in-shop, so we sent it away to be done by laser. The people doing it chipped the stone. They offered to have it recut for free, but then it wouldn't fit the ring, so instead my owners just replaced the center stone with a nearly indentical one. Their intention was to lie to the woman so she wouldn't get upset (to protect her, really) about her mother's stone, because it was so sentimental to me. They were going to let her believe she had the original. While this may have been best for her fragile emotions, this did NOT fly with me. I told Mike I was going to tell her the truth if I dealt with her and he should do the same. He called Randy and they agreed that I was right and they'd let her choose either stone, but not keep both because we replaced it for free and it was a really nice stone. Well, Mike went home sick before she came in. When she did, I dealt with her, told her the whole story, and she was really grateful that I was honest. I knew how sentimental both the ring and the stone were to her, so I went against my owners' wishes and let her keep both, no charge. I called Mike and told him that if he was upset with my decision, he could take it out of my paycheck and I would understand. I do think that the customer was really happy with me when she left the store, though, and I don't think she would have been pleased if we had made her choose between her mother's stone and her mother's setting, when they really did both belong to her. Mike said he wasn't upset with me but he'd have to talk to Randy. I have no idea how much that stone cost...probably around $500...which is why I say I may have just given a really expensive gift to a complete stranger. All I know is that if it was me, I wouldn't have been able to make that choice, so I wasn't about to make the customer who'd just lost her mother choose either. I feel good about myself but I may not get a paycheck next week. Oh well, being kind to people is more important. I hope Randy and Mike will understand why I made that choice.

Gotta go. Class.
Peace.
