Dec. 8th, 2012 06:59 pmI went to bed last night at 6pm. I was awake until slightly later, but I was most certainly beat. My vacation to New York wasn't exactly restful, but it was worth it :) I had anxiety dreams about my race all night, but when I actually got out there, it was pretty good. I made nice small talk with another few runners who were there on their own, and everything started right on time, which was a welcome change from the norm. Unfortunately, half the volunteers failed to show up, so there were very few folks on the course directing us at key turns and whatnot. The signage was decent, and I was in part of a small pack for most of the race, so I wasn't too confused about the trail, but it could have been better. It was VERY hilly. The end of mile 2 was a long, steep hill -- probably a quarter mile long or more? And very steep. Like, steep enough that I wouldn't drive on that road in the rain. All of the people in front of me in my pack stopped to walk at some point on that hill, and I passed most of them there. The hill was way hard for me and I took it slow, but I paced myself well and was able to maintain a jog the whole way. I figured those that I passed would come back and pass me later, but most ended up falling back after that. That's a mean hill to have before even the halfway point of the race.
There were a few more ups and downs, but the rest were more gradual. It was definitely a tough race. It was advertised as a 6.5K, which is 4.03 miles, but there was a 4 mile marker at least five minutes before I finished, so I think it was over 4.5 miles in all. I emailed the race director to find out. I'm not sure how many people were way ahead of me, but I know the 6.5K only had about 30 people in it -- more ran the 5K -- and when I finished, I passed everyone that I could see. I didn't place, but I may have been the first girl. The people who beat me beat me by enough that I lost sight of them within the first half mile and never saw them again, but it felt good to win out of my little pack. I think I just did way better than the others at pacing myself and dealing with the hills, whereas they were running full tilt so that when they got to the hills, that took it all out of them.
I came home after the race, took a long, hot shower, and then went back to bed for a 2-hour nap. I guess I was pretty behind on sleep. Feeling caught up now, but too sore to be really productive. I've played a lot of online bridge today, and now I'm settling in to watch the Blazers game and paint my nails. Good weekend so far.
