Nov. 3rd, 2004 07:03 amI am absolutely disgusted. I am ill. I haven't given up on Kerry yet, but it doesn't look good. The only bright side is that Hillary Clinton could run in 2008 now. And that maybe Teresa Heinz Kerry won't be first lady. Oy, my whole body hurts. I just do not understand how over half of the nation can completely disregard all the shit that's happened in the last four years. Two wars in which no objective has even been stated, with more and more young people being sent into danger each day, an economy that in 2001 was handed over with the largest surplus in history and now, four years later, the largest deficit ever, congress spending the last year fighting over the gay marriage issue while there are so many more important things to worry about - seriously, who is hurt by a gay marriage? NO ONE. Get over it, your church doesn't have to comply, but we're talking the federal term. Uf. And what does everyone have to show for it? A $300 check from a two year old tax cut that costs you way more than that when quality educational opportunities are denied to your family? Do you people really think Bush and the republicans in congress are doing a good job, or are you just hateful, evil people? I just don't understand how this many people can miss the point.
And what about you Christians? I'm not one, but I am married to a man licensed to preach the word, and I am a religious scholar, and what do I think Jesus would do? I wish he'd smite George W. Bush and his political allies, but he wouldn't, you know why? Because he's a pacifist! Jesus hates war. And this man thinks he's ordained by God to do the Lord's work on earth? It makes me ill. To quote the Indigo Girls, "There is no nation by God exempted. Lay down your weapons and love your neighbor as yourself." Okay, Jesus disapproves of abortion. He probably does. But to label yourself pro-life and at the same time support the death penalty, or worse, war, do you realize how hypocritical that is? Democrats aren't pro-abortion! We don't just love killing off babies. In fact, I hate the idea of abortion, and I wouldn't go so far as to call myself pro-choice at all. I just don't want to call myself pro-life because of all that means. But we Democrats do prefer an educational and contraceptive-distribution program that will likely greatly reduce the issue of abortion. But the Christian Coalition keeps bullying our schools to stop promoting this heathen behavior among children, arguing that teaching about sex encourages kids to have sex. Now, let's compare this to something else:
Mom: Don't do drugs.
Kid: Why?
Mom: Because I said so.
Kid: (does drugs)
This is a gross oversimplification, but do you see my point? We have to be open with kids. They're likely to try things out anyway, so we have to prepare them to make safe decisions. But if we don't want them to experiment, keeping them in the dark isn't going to work - too many kids know too much, and all kids are curious to an extent. You can't just shield a person from the issues that worry you. If you're not ready to talk to your children about drugs, sex, etc, you're not ready to have kids! If you REALLY love them, you'll respect them, and love them in a way that guarantees their returned affection. When your kids respect you, they'll do what you ask, and it's easier to discuss these issues to begin with. Look at Elana and Aaron. They are the most well-adjusted kids I've ever known. I think they knew more about some "stuff" than I did when I was their babysitter. But they get awesome grades, they're great people, everyone likes them, and they remain dedicated to their religion. And neither one of them has turned to a life of whoredom. Anyway I've really pounded this tangent, and I'm really tired and annoyed...I'm going back to bed. Thank you to all my friends for being liberal people. I'm not preaching at you when I say all this, of course...peace.
