Work yesterday was pretty normal. I had this guy checking in at the very end of my shift who would not just hand over his credit card and ID, so I couldn't even start checking him in while he chatted. He had two units, but instead of being in the same building, they were next door to each other, and he wanted us to put him in one building. He actually suggested that we call someone already checked in to the unit above his and ask them to move. Um, no. So I had Matt come out and explain, as a manager, all the same shit I'd just said. The guy was nice, but he lacked perspective. It's like all the other 10,000 guests (seriously) here this week are just robots and he's the only real guest. So anyway I keep asking him for his ID so I can get started, but no...he just ignores me and tells story after story. So I pull up notepad on the computer and I type, "Why do guests always want to tell their life stories? I just want to go home!" Matt read it while this guy was yapping and he just burst out laughing. Not that what I wrote was particularly funny, but that I had discovered this way to communicate jabs at the customer with them standing right there. So clever, I know:) Well, I finally got the guy checked in, and was already 10 minutes late checking out, which was fine, cause that's overtime for me. But anyway I go to the back office to clock out, and the doors are closed. I asked Matt what was going on, and he said "It's a danger zone back there!" I figured it couldn't be that bad and I really wanted to go home, so I opened the door. Christine and Burke, who until now have only hated each other behind the other's back, were screaming at each other. Burke is always calling Christine lazy, and usually rightfully so, but on this particular night, I'm on her side (as much as I do prefer Burke to her). He had said something about her being lazy, when that night, she was being very helpful and wasn't flirting with any of the other employees like she usually does. Burke, on the other hand, who usually is very driven, had been lazy all night. So that's what they were yelling about. It was funny. But they were genuinely livid.

Also yesterday at work but on a completely different note, there was a Baptist church group having a "meeting" up in our conference room. During said meeting, TWO women had to be rushed to the hospital for heart attacks. What were they DOING up there? I think it was either a revival or an exorcism. Either way, none of the folks there were particularly old or overweight, so what are the chances of two heart attacks in a group of 40 people within 30 minutes? They were doing something freaky. Baptists are so weird. Sorry if you are one. It's the baptist church in Harrisonburg that pays their minister $75,000/year. Janet explained that you have to make up for his 10% tithe. SO not the point. Anyway. The baptist church in McGaheysville had a tent revival week over the summer, and as soon as that was over, they started construction on a new building...guess they exorcised all their green demons.

Time for work. More fun stories tonight, hopefully;)

Peace.

Part of it is so that the minister can live in a similar fashion as his parishoners. I went to a church, for a time, that paid our minister something comparable.

If the church has the budget for it, without it compromising the provision of community service, and the median income is somewhere around there, it makes some degree of sense. It'd be wretched if a minister (human as they may be) were somewhat resentful of a congregation for pecuniary reasons, when they could avoid it.

The average income here in Harrisonburg is somewhere around $20,000 a year. The living wage is $7.50 an hour. I understand getting paid to be a minister - it certainly is a lot of work - but you shouldn't be in it for the money. And the fact that this church supplements his salary because he tithes - ridiculous. I'm married to a minister, and I'd be ashamed if we lived luxuriously off his salary. It just doesn't seem right.

And I forgot to mention - they provide housing and full medical coverage for him, too - so does he even need a salary at all? Barely.

only in terms of saving for a retirement, I suppose. Plus, furnishing his house, a car, life insurance...

but it could easily get excessive.
