Feb. 11th, 2005 08:57 amBridge was good last night. Mom and I played really well, and were just shy of the lead. As far as we could tell, we didn't make any mistakes at all. The only reason we didn't get top boards was because some idiots at another table just kept handing the game to the opponents. We still placed so I was pleased. The field was much larger and tougher this week than it had been in the previous two weeks. Everyone complimented me on how much my game has improved. :) It's funny, because some partnerships will bounce all over the scoreboard, first place one week, last place the next, but Mom and I are pretty consistently dominant. Even if we aren't *winning,* I think it is a testament to our game. I really like playing with her these days. I used to hate it. I really look forward to playing with Jer one day, too, but I'm not really doing much to teach him. I don't have the patience.
This morning, Mom and I are going thrift shopping in Charlottesville. She manages the Schoolhouse Thrift Shop here (it's owned by her church), and she thinks they have something I need. We'll see.
I finished The True and Outstanding Adventures of the Hunt Sisters. I don't know how to review it. I don't want to call it a great book, because I do have some criticisms, but it was very entertaining and even though I find the author flawed, the story is good. The main flaw is that it's written entirely in the form of letters from the protagonist to various other characters, so in order to fully tell the story, some of the letters seem forced. Like flashbacks and descriptions are thrown in that you wouldn't normally write in a letter to your sister, or ex-boyfriend or whomever. But if you can overlook that for the sake of the story, you'll enjoy it.
My mother now insists that I begin reading the Janet Evanovich series. I don't know anything about them, other than the fact that they seem really cheesy but people like my mother can't get enough of them...I guess I'll humor her, since the books are free and after I finish The Notebook, I'll need some more books. Emily recommended The Secret Life of Bees, and I have to admit I place her recommendations ahead of those of my mother. This is probably a very boring journal entry to read;) But if anyone has any insight on these books, let me know.
Oh, there's another concert to add to the late winter series. Emily, Jer, and I are going to see the Indigo Girls in March. Look at this lineup:
Feb 18 - Virginia Gentlemen with the Accidentals
Feb 19 - Crooked Still
Mar 19 - Indigo Girls
Mar 31 - Eddie From Ohio
Sometime in May - Accidentals final show (I will be the one crying like a baby in the front row, probably)
July 21-24 - Falcon Ridge Folk Festival, with the following artists confirmed:
EFO, Dar Williams, Brave Combo, The Kennedys, Tracy Grammer, The Nields, and more to come...like fifty more...so exciting:)
Peace.

Date: 2005-02-12 03:34 pm (UTC)Joan called today. She said before I do anything else I should do a facial with you. I also have some questions about the materials in the starter kit, etc. The girls at work are getting excited about my "debut." I guess that's good news. I need to clean my house, then we can play some euchre and talk beauty. Let me know when you're available. Next weekend is bad for me except Sunday.
