Apr. 3rd, 2005 10:25 pmJeremy seems to think I'm reading too much into this, which is why I'm posting first only on my personal journal and not in my folkie communities. This will only be relevant to people who are familiar with Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer, which means, like, two of you, but still. Dave and Tracy's first three albums were made up of songs primarily written before 2001. They are full of beautiful poetry and composition, and tell wonderful stories about the wonder that is our earth. Now that Tracy has put out Flower of Avalon, I note a much heavier air of social commentary. These were songs written in 2001 and 2002. I attribute it to the social consciousness that arose from the events of 2001 and onward. I point to the Bush administration as the object of most of this commentary. Jeremy points out that Bush is not solely responsible for all that I hate in the world, but I remind him that Bush is a figurehead of a lot that is hateful in the world, and we liberals like to use the word "Bush" synonymously with words like "evil," "hate," and "stupidity." No offense if you don't share these sentiments, and I'm not calling you evil, hateful, or stupid if you do like him...I just really really don't and I honestly believe he is guided by these traits. Anyway. My very drawn-out point here is that I do honestly think one good thing - one VERY good thing - has come out of the reign of the right wing. That is a wealth of beautiful, poignant songs, largely of the folk variety. Songs that come to mind are:
Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer: Hey Ho, their choice to arrange and cover Laughlin Boy
Girlyman: Commander, Soldier, Young James Dean (Girlyman is great at social commentary)
Indigo Girls: One Perfect World
Sarah McLachlan: World On Fire
There are more. Anyway, that's all I have to say about that, for now. Cady, did you check out any Dave and Tracy yet? I think you can listen to a lot for free on www.daveandtracy.com.
Anyway...
I'm feeling better and worse now. I made it through work just fine. My sore throat all but went away, but I was cautious anyway and only ate a sandwich with a glass of water for lunch. I came home at 3 and almost immediately fell asleep. Jeremy is still feeling icky - mine is more of a top half of my body thing and his is definitely a waist-down ailment - so we slept instead of joining his family. I'm sorry we missed it, but it wouldn't have gone well. I ended up feeling sick to my stomach later today, so I'm glad I was near my own bathrooms. We both slept most of the afternoon, and now it's late and we're going strong. I finished the third Janet Evanovich book. I'm kind of embarassed that I love these books so much - it's another one of my guilty pleasures, along with E! TV and the Real World/Road Rules challenges. :)
Emily V. and I talked over IM for a while tonight, too. We talked about pastries and work apparrel. It was a good talk. Hopefully I'll get to join her for her OM tournament in two weeks and we'll have more talks just like it. If you weren't one of them, you will never understand my connections with my middle school and high school friends, so don't waste your time trying. You can just go sulk in a corner that you weren't nearly as cool as we were back then. (That would be another joke you'd get if you knew us back then!) Never mind the details, my friends are the best, and if you are one of them, I love you dearly.
Now it's time to try to coerce my body into a deep slumber. Maybe some liquor will help.
Peace.
