Apr. 19th, 2005 10:47 amMan. Yesterday was totally a good day. Everything about it was just good.
Lesson learned, though - don't hold a Mary Kay party at a college right before exams. People forget. A couple of folks showed up, though, and I took a few orders and got another booking out of it. I hate the really aggressive approach, but I guess I'll at least need to start making reminder phone calls so people actually remember to come. Oh well. I had a good time.
After the party, I went up to Katie's room and saw her wedding dress. She's doing student teaching right now for 11th grade English. Her basic level kids had an assignment to write a letter to Congressman Goodlatte, our local rep, about what they think is the biggest problem in Virginia. She was letting me read them, and I have never laughed harder in my life. At first it was sad because the writing is terrible. 11th grade and they still can't spell, use punctuation, or form a complete sentence. Damn. But they were so funny! Katie had wanted to send them but they're so bad she decided not to. I told her she should, and as a cover letter, she should write about how the biggest problem in the state of Virginia is education. We got a great laugh out of that one.
If I had that group of kids, they'd hate me. I understand that some kids have learning disabilities that can't be helped, but so many of these problems could've been fixed if they'd just so much as glanced over their work before turning it in. For example, lots of kids that took advantage of spell check had written letters to Congressman Good latte'. One girl wrote the same sentence three times in a row. Anyway I was saying the kids would hate me - because I'd read their POS attempts at composition to the whole class. One of the funnier things is that about half the kids wrote about the problem of homelessness in Harrisonburg. It was the example Katie used when giving the assignment. But in my four years in this city, I've never seen ANY homeless people. Maybe the homeless problem is that there aren't enough bums on the street?
I rocked out to Mark Erelli all the way to BC and back. His album is very country, but I really like it. I guess I do like country music - just none of the crap you usually hear on a country station. I really love the song "Miracle Man." IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII'll never be your miracle man...it's just so fun to sing along. He'll be at FRFF this year, right? Another must see added to my list.
Anyway, I've got things to do - like go to work in four hours - so I guess I should get ready, or think about getting ready, or think about thinking about getting ready...peace.
