Ode to Queen Shelly
May. 4th, 2005 11:56 amI don't know why Shelly didn't expect to be included in my friend tribute. Maybe it's because the universe has gotten her down lately and she just hasn't been thinking so positively lately. That said, I'd like to expand on her wonderfulness, just because.
I first became acquainted with Shelly when I joined the Edhead list (EFO email group). She posted a lot and always seemed to have the inside info on the bandos. Immediately, I was jealous of her insider status with EFO. I'm sure we were at many a concert together, but I never actually met her until Falcon Ridge 2003. She was instrumental in getting me to come (posting lots of excitement to the list, getting me pumped, and inviting me to camp with the Edheads). Jeremy and I got to Hillsdale after a ten hour drive (it's only supposed to be 7 but I didn't even bother to consult a map), then we couldn't find our camp. It took forEVER. After more than two hours of driving, we finally saw the lovely EFO camp, and got set to unload. Shelly gave us both hugs and made some introductions. We were officially in.
Shelly is also the person who wakes up at 4am to stand in line to get the best seats on the hill for the whole group. But does she go to bed early so she is well rested for this task? No. She stays up late at night, cooking for everyone in the campsite. She also goes backstage and works her magic, getting the performers to come visit the rest of us back at camp, luring them with promises of guac and Shellyshots. We've got the best food, the best campers, and all the greatest folk allstars at our camp, all thanks to Shelly. Did I mention that she always is the first to arrive, and she ropes off our territory and sets up the lobby and flagpole AND she's the one who emails everyone before the fest to get everything organized for a smooth camping experience? This is why she is Queen Shelly. She deserves serious praise.
Shelly always puts her friends first. She volunteers to do merch sales for all the bandos at dozens of shows a year, travelling far and wide to promote her friends in their occupations. She writes me letters during the workday so I have something cheerful in my mailbox besides bills, and she never scolds me even though it takes me forever to write back. (I try, really). She has hard times of her own, but she's always the first to offer support when a friend hits a rough spot. She could be relaxing this weekend after a hard week of work and car troubles, but instead she's driving three hours to come walk in the Walk to Cure Diabetes. Remember how I've been promoting that for her? If you haven't donated yet, you still can:

In conclusion, I <3 Shelly, and I hope I didn't make her cry at work. And please donate to her walk.
Peace.
