So...do you think gas prices are temporarily spiking, or is this something we need to get used to?

I will say that it is a big strain and I wish it didn't have to be so expensive, but on the other hand it's about damn time people have to find ways to conserve.

But seriously...what are your thoughts and predictions on the gas situation?

I just heard they are dipping into the international reserves, so maybe some relief will come. I think it will be some time, but they'll have to come down. Something like 40% of our refineries and rigs are down right now in the gulf. That's a little hard to swallow.

Stations running out and people acting like complete idiots is what scares me more. I can live without running all over the county. I welcome a reason to stay home, really.

Well, the oil itself ain't the problem at the moment. The lack of crude from the gulf will keep prices up. It's the fact that a large chunk of the refineries are offline.

If it hasn't come down by Wednesday or Thursday, you could see $4/gallon later this summer--it's either a serious Labor Day Spike, or else we're in trouble.

Welcome to supply and demand, though.

Labor Day, my sweet ass. It's Katrina that's causing the problem.

I personally think it's good that people are feeling the crunch. We should have even/odd days ALL the time. Maybe then people would be responsible with their fuel consumption.

On the minus side, I'm not going to W'burg this weekend, and I'd like to visit you Sunday, but don't think I'd be able to. :-/ I'll be by sometime soon though. (Like...maybe after I get my hybrid?) :-D

they're BOTH contributing to the problem. Trend lines will show that right before Labor Day Weekend, gas prices spike--hell, keep your eye out come Thanksgiving season. Of course prices spike now, people will buy it anyway. Katrina also interfered with delivery, too. Regardless, after Labor Day Weekend, that contribution will (might, at least) fall out--but prices will keep going up.

Hence, if it doesn't fall significantly by Wed. or Thurs., a more conclusive proof that prices are really gonna be trouble.

Also, I'd've not used "sweet" to describe the flavor. At all.

heh

just 'cause you've never gotten a mouthful doesn't mean there isn't a taste.

I have the feeling it'll take a few months to come back down. It always takes longer to go down than it did to spike. I hope and pray that it's not permanent. The heating oil prices will leave so many people without warm homes this winter :(

i'm figuring that it's something we're going to have to get used to. so, i bought a bike and the next car i get will be a hybrid.

Yay, good for you.

But you take such good care of your car (two years old and I thought it was brand new!!), you'll never need to replace it.

erm...my car is more like 8 years old. maybe even more. i'll probably hold onto it for maybe 5 more years coz it's working fine and it gets good gas mileage. but with these gas prices it still costs over $30 to fill up the tank.

Well...It's going to continue to increase, perhaps to $5 or $6. Then it should decrease, I just don't think it'll be below $2.50 for a VERY long time.

Isn't it $6 in Atlanta already?
