In the news this morning: a motorist fired 5 to 10 rounds into a cornfield killing one Amish boy after his car was repeatedly pelted with tomatoes. Here's a basic rundown of the story:
apparently, every labor day, the Amish kids in this particular county get together and throw tomatoes at cars. They've been doing it for years, claimed one local resident. But this year, a motorist was offended. He got out of his car and yelled that he would shoot them if they did it again. The kids were hiding in a cornfield, so he couldn't see them well, and vice versa. He drives by several more times, and several more times his car is hit with tomatoes and paintballs from a paintball gun - more on that momentarily. So after the fifth time, he gets out and opens fire, killing one kid. Now, ok, it's wrong to kill. But he can't say he didn't warn them. I'm not trying to be insensitive. The guy should not have shot them. But what the fuck were they doing throwing tomatoes at cars? It's such a pain in the ass to clean that shit up. And paintballs? A) Paintballs stain and leave dents. B) You're fucking AMISH! What the fuck are you doing with paintball guns? No modern conveniences like electricity - God hates electricity - but the Lord loves a good game of paintball? A good car-mauling? What if people had their windows down? We're talking potentially deadly prank. And everyone knows they do it? Who lets them do this shit? If I got tomatoed by a bunch of Amish brats, I'd have some choice words myself. If it happened five times after I'd already demonstrated my frustration? Yeah, I'd open up a can of whoopass. Not bullets, mind you, but those Amish boys would be damaged goods if they fucked with my car. And my car sucks, even. This guy was driving a Lincoln or a Cadilac, according to CNN.com. Once again, it's wrong that he shot them and it's awful that someone died, but they could've really hurt someone, too. Regardless of hurting them or not, they're fucking up people's cars. Maybe they don't understand this because they don't deal with cars, but hey! Amish people! Cars are expensive! You could buy your way out of purgatory with a car. At least, if you're Catholic in 1100AD. But that doesn't make a lot of sense either. About as much sense as an Amish kid with a paintball gun.
Here's where I have to calm down. You see, I don't think there's anything wrong with being Amish, and I respect the people who do it well...but I don't think you're really doing your best to respect the creator by firing rotten tomatoes at other lambs of God.
One more thing about this article got me. The author was explaining that Amish "don't believe" in modern conveniences like "cars or electricity." Someone needs to come up with a better way to phrase that kind of thought. I'm sorry you don't believe in cars or electricity...but they exist. There's very little denying that, unless you're completely existential like I am but then you'd have to deny your certainty in God's existence, and if you're not pretty fucking sure about your God, then why in the world do you shun "modern conveniences." If I were to get down on my knees and thank the lord, the first few things I'd give thanks for are my flushing toilet, my car, and my computer. Just kidding, I'd thank her for all my friends and family and the love in my heart first...but then for my car, computer, and toilet. Oh and fake chicken, which I doubt would be that easy without some electricity.
Another thought, not that I think the world should become vegetarian (although that would be great!), but why do some people think it's more in line with God's will to shun electricity than to be vegetarian? I mean I understand the whole argument about the food chain and science and all that...but if we're going to get into science shall we talk about evolution?
I should stop or I won't make it to the class I have in three hours.
Peace.
