Isn't it funny how sometimes when people cover someone else's song, they do a better job? I mean, I guess the original artist did the hard part...but still. I really prefer Tracy's version of Jackson Browne's "In the Shape of a Heart." I also prefer the Girlyman version to the Billy Bragg song "Way Over Yonder in the Minor Key." The same is true for basically every Crooked Still cover. But I guess that's partly because I already have allegiances to these artists.

My CD player is still broken, so I'm giving internet radio a shot. I can't say I've really made any new discoveries. Oh well.

I rolled quarters all morning. Woohoo.

Peace.

how about Aretha's cover of Otis Redding's "Respect"

Ravel's orchestration of Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition"

or, in a so bad it's awful category of its own "American Pie" as slaughtered by Madonna

(not that I have an opinion)

Aretha Franklin didn't originally do Respect? Wow. (Learn something new every day.)

Dude. Read the lyrics. (from, for lack of a more quickly available source, oldielyrics.com)
"Hey little girl, you're so sweeter than honey
And I am about to just give you all my money

All I'm asking for
Is a little respect when I come home

Hey little girl, you're sweeter than honey
And I am about to give you all my money"

or, "I make the money. I'm the man. I want some" *pantomime slap at pelvic height* "respect."

Bob Dylan also wrote the song "All Along the Watchtower," which is better known as Jimi Hendrix's greatest hit - or one of them.

Freshman year of college, my friend Margaret ([livejournal.com profile] toridethewind) insisted VEHEMENTLY that Peter, Paul and Mary wrote Blowin' In the Wind. I had to resort to the Internet to convince her of the truth.
