Dec. 10th, 2005 06:54 pmIt's days like today where you can accomplish tons and still feel like you've left a lot undone. I'm sure those of you taking your finals know exactly what I mean. Luckily, all of my doings today were of the leisurely sort. We had big plans. Unfortunately, there are only so many hours in a day. And everything in this town closes at five. (Except for the ocean part, Dar Williams' "The Ocean" could be about Harrisonburg!) Anyway, we did do some stuff:)
Jer and I first met Meredith and her eldest daughter at the Green Valley Book Fair. Today is the second-to-last day of the fair, so a lot of the selection had been picked over. But even as it winds down, it's a sight to behold. The books I'd gone to get (Jane Austen's Emma and David Sedaris' Me Talk Pretty One Day) were not there, but I still managed to spend almost $100. I bought Sense and Sensibility, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, Smart vs. Pretty, and a Mensa quiz book for myself, and several things for other folks as well. It was a success.
Jer and I briefly stopped in the Dayton Farmers' Market, but the place was such a zoo we couldn't really browse comfortably, and we left after just a few minutes to get lunch. We went downtown to the Indian & American Cafe, but they'd just closed for lunch and wouldn't open for dinner for another 2 1/2 hours. So we meandered. At this point I should mention that I was wearing flip-flops. Nevermind that there was snow and ice on the ground and that it was below freezing outside. I didn't feel like looking for my real shoes. I didn't expect to do much outdoor walking, either. But when the cafe was closed, we had no choice. We went by Ben's apartment, but I think he's already gone home for the break, so we went to Jess' for grilled cheese to hold us over until the Indian place opened for dinner. We meandered some more, just missed the closing of a fabric store I've been meaning to visit for months (grr), and ended up at the library. Every single thing I looked for was checked out. It was frustrating, so we left, and stopped in a thrift store, more because my feet were cold than because I wanted to shop. But I ended up buying a dress and a sweater for myself. The dress was SO cute. And it fit beautifully. And it's a thrift store. It hardly broke the bank.
By the time we left the thrift store, our restaurant was open, so we went in and placed our order. Most of it came home in boxes because the grilled cheeses were still in our systems, but that's fine, because there's nothing better than wondering what you'll have for dinner and remembering you have leftovers from your favorite restaurant. You don't have to cook AND you get your favorite food. Double score.
So now we're home. I didn't do a lot of what I'd wanted to, but I still had a wildly productive (consumptive?) day, and I got to spend it with Jeremy. Even though he pissed me off a few times throughout the course of the day, there is no one with whom I would have rather passed the day. Now he is napping to prepare for his shift tonight (he would've taken off tonight instead of last night if possible, but he couldn't - otherwise we'd be at the Freys' party now...sigh), and I think I'm going to go crack one of these books.
Peace.
