Jan. 15th, 2006 05:42 pmThis weekend was fabulous! I couldn't have hoped it would go any better. Okay, that's a lie. Namedropper could've not been there. But that bitch is everywhere. At least she didn't talk to me this time. With Joe and Kitty Murphy (Julie's parents - now I'm doing it!) there, she had more important people on her radar. It's just like the Getaway People song "There She Goes." Kind of.
Anyway, to refocus my attentions on the fabulousness that was this weekend...
I did get my wish that the rain would stop before I set out. However, I was not specific enough to say I wanted an absence of precipitation. Instead of rain, there was snow. But that didn't turn out to be a problem, and at least the clouds blocked the glare of the sun on my way up, which I realized on the way down was a very good thing. Note to self: avoid long trips west in the afternoon. Anyway, the drive up was really beautiful. I took 340 instead of 81 to get to 66, and I was driving alongside the Shenandoah River on one side of me and a beautiful set of train tracks on the other side. When you're a folk fan, railroads are something special, I guess. Anyway, I'll never take 81 again to get to DC. 340 was just so lovely.
I met Kerry and Jill at their house, and the Jewells picked us all up so we could carpool from there. I sat in the back of the van, which is exactly where you should be if Stuart is driving, which he was. I was not impressed with the Birchmere, but the drinks did hit the spot and the show was wonderful, so I won't complain too much about the venue, except to say that I don't know why everyone said I would love it so much. $12.95 for macaroni and cheese? PLEASE. But, our seats were great - front row stage Mike.
Jim Boggia was the opening act. Kerry had given us some discs to get to know him, and Jeremy has had them in his car ever since. I hadn't had much of a chance to listen to him, but Jer was really into it, so I was feeling good about it. Almost from the very first note, I was in love. I had a come to jesus moment during his set where I was just hanging on every word and soaking it up. Kerry and Jill are friends of his (more namedropping, gosh!), so they introduced me after his set. I liked him very much and can't wait to see him again. I love when that happens! Usually I just resent the opening act for delaying my pleasure. I hate that if you want good seats (and I do), you have no choice but to be there and sit through the opener, no matter how shitty. But I guess I've had more positive experiences than negative ones regarding openers lately. Anyway, we said goodbye so we could get back for EFO, and Jim gave me a hug. *swoon* Okay, he's not sexy or hot or anything like that - but he is a folk singer, and a damn good one. That, itself, is sexy and hot.
We were in for a big shock when EFO came out - a certain bass player had joined the ranks of bald bandos by shaving his head a few days prior. It was a lovely act of solidarity (Julie is bald now from chemo), but I'll be glad when his hair is back. It's not his best look. Julie, however, wears it very well. She started the show with a wig, but changed during a break and came out with just a hat on, and then ripped the hat off her head to bask in fleshy glory during the grand finale of the second encore song. I <3 Julie.
Believe it or not, this is but the abridged version. There's more to write, laugh, and smile about, but it's now time to wake my husband and see how he's feeling about dinner, so that's going to be all. Next concert (as of now) is the February 12 double header - Crooked Still followed by Girlyman. :)
Peace.
