education, one step at a time part one
Jun. 9th, 2003 02:24 pmThe following two posts are the two parts (divided because they were too long) of a reply I had to a stranger's post. I ran across this girl as a friend of a friend, and saw this post, which discouraged me: "I hate living in a Democratic city. I tend not to be able to defend Bush-dom. Close-minded and liberal. Isn't that like an oxymoron? At least that's the way it seems like here." So the following is my reply, in two parts.
First of all, Charlottesville may be mostly democratic but Albemarle County districts 5 and 7 (which includes all of the AHS and WAHS districts) are the most loyaly republican districts in the whole country. Secondly, the reason you cannot defend "Bush-dom" is because there is no good defense. If an argument is good, it will still be the winning argument, even if stupid people try to steamroll you and say you're wrong without providing an argument. Numbers don't make a person right - that's certainly the case in politics. The mean value of idiocy is still idiocy. Liberal and closed-mined is, in fact, an oxy-moron, and I am ashamed that the democrats you have spoken with cannot provide you with a better reason to be a democrat. Here are a few that I can think of just off the top of my head:
Republicanism is the practice of robbing from the poor and giving to the rich. Example: the private schools grants that are being passed all over the country allow a parent a grant of $1500 to withdraw their child from public school and enroll them in the private school of their choice. However, almost all private schools cost much more than $1500 to attend, so this still doesn't make the option available to many common people. Furthermore, in Virginia, at the beginning of the school year, a school's budget is determined by giving the school $5000 per student enrolled. If you take a student out of a public school by giving them a grant of $1500, you take away $5000 from a public school that obviously needs it or you wouldn't want to send your kid somewhere else. What happens to the other $3500? It doesn't go to the school, that's for sure. Why not give it to the parents? Because then lower class kids would be able to afford it, too, and I'm sorry, but private school is no place for poor people. It gets sent back to you in the form of a tax refund that you can only receive if you can prove you don't need it.
I used to be a republican. My parents were, and they are good people. I said I would never be a democrat because I would never be pro-choice. I'm still 100% against abortions, however I call myself pro-choice anyway. Why? You can choose abstinence, condoms, birth control pills, and countless other methods of contraception. However, many people are ignorant to their options or how to get them because Republicans and the Christian right like to suppress education and availability of these supposedly immoral things. If Democrats had their way, which is availability and education on contraception, there would be almost no need for abortion anymore. Republicans perpetuate their own problems by failing to recognize that times change and not everyone has the same morals....continued in part two
