"Although he said he did not blame the pill for his daughter's death, Monty Patterson regretted that she and her boyfriend hadn't received more information and support from family members, counselors and physicians."

From cnn.com, "Teen dies after complications from abortion pill," Sept. 22, 2003.

This is why I am both pro-life and pro-choice. I don't believe that abortion should be one of the choices, but people who are adequately educated should not ever have to be faced with that choice.

If unplanned pregnancy is caused by ignorance, carelessness, or accident, then I think lack of a solid foundation of knowledge about the options one has prior to sexual activity are to blame for that ignorance, and that lack is caused by the right-wingers in power who will do anything to keep that information out of schools. It would be great if every family could talk openly and honestly about sex on their own, but it doesn't happen enough. I mean, geez, I'm a well-educated individual, but until I was in 4th grade, I thought it was impossible to get pregnant if you weren't married, and I had no idea that pregnancy was caused by sex. That's not because I just didn't know, that's because my parents LIED to me about it. Granted, not every six year old needs to know about sex, but no one's parents should be so uncomfortable about it that they lie to their kid about something that can potentially cause them a lot of trouble down the road. Ok, yes, now I know about sex, so I didn't need my parents to tell me that necessarily, but because I remember them lying about it, I know that they're uncomfortable dealing with it, and if I ever get into trouble somehow, I'll probably be afraid to talk to them. I hate the idea of abortion, but if it were me, I would have a really hard time facing up to my folks about pregnancy. The point of this roundabout discussion is that I think sex ed should be mandatory in the schools, because you can't rely on parents for everything, and kids really do need to know what it's all about - it's all over the place nowadays, so there's no protecting them - best to just give people a healthy attitude about it from the start. The less curious a person is, the less likely they are to experiment without adequate knowledge about risk, etc. That article just sent me into a fury. Sorry, done now.
Peace
