And the winner of the best fortune cookie ever award is...
"Every exit is an entrance to new experiences." In bed.

And the winner of the excellence in demonstrating maturity award is...
Not me.

:)

Emily G. and I had lunch together this afternoon at the Chinese restaurant around the corner. That was her cookie. Not only was mine lame, it was a repeat. I guess I'm just not that fortunate. I'll get over it.

While we were out walking on the downtown mall, an army recruiter stepped up to us as asked if we'd ever considered a career in the military. He didn't look blind, but he must have been. My outfit: bright-colored tye-dye blouse, open over an Indigo Girls tank top, brown pants, blue Chuck Taylors, Guatemalan woven knapsack complete with pin with a picture of a peace sign and the words "If not now, when? If not us, who?" And this dude asked me if I wanted to join the army. Either he was having a really good day and felt like he could convince absolutely anyone of the benefits of such a choice, or he was executing a dare. Either way, let's say he had successfully recruited me today. If I'd reported for duty looking like this, he and I both would've been handed a section 8 discharge. I only wish I'd been wearing the shirt I had on yesterday - my Arlo Guthrie camo shirt that says "Not moral enough to join the army." Then he might've gotten excited about the camo, only to approach me and then see the words...oh, the amusement.

It seems I see those military recruiters everywhere I go these days. They're always out on the mall, or in grocery store parking lots or some such place, just waiting to ambush as everyday shoppers try to go about their business. It's like a very strange combination of drug pushing and Jehovah's Witness tactics. I'm not a fan. Between drug pushing, Jehovah's Witness evangelicalizing, and military recruiting, I bet these methods work best for drugs. How successful, really, are the other two? It's one thing to have a table at a high school or something where people can come to you, but how likely are you to get someone to sign away their life to the military, or their soul to a different religion, by just accosting them and interrupting their daily errands? Yeesh.

I'd like to hear some "success" stories - anyone? I'd love stats, too. Please share any insights.

Peace.

I once had a fortune cookie that said "Oops, sorry - wrong fortune." I felt really robbed.

Ick, I haven't run into a recruiter on the street - ever. That would weird me out just as much as anyone trying to accost me while doing my errands. I agree, who in their right mind is going to go from running errands to joining the Army in a matter of minutes?

Hey -

My name's Karen, I just added you as a friend - I'm also a recent transfer from The Burg. I've lurked for a little bit while browsing other Cville LJ's, and then realized that doing that's probably a little creepy and not what I mean to do, so I just added you. :) Anyway, I enjoy reading your stuff.

Great - I'm glad someone enjoys it:)

I added you back - it seems we have a good bit in common. Are you from Charlottesville or are you here for the first time now?

And what do you do? Life story in a nutshell? (It's important to me to know at least basic things about the people who read my journal - I've had stalkers before and it is not cool...)

:)

Not a bad policy, actually

Let's see....Born and raised in the the Valley, went to JMU for a little bit then dropped out due to lack of interest and stupid personal things. But while I was there I learned just enough to get me a job at the TV station, where I stayed for 3 years, until finally escaping last april to Cville. (by the way, don't ever work for that place, it's evil, and not the good kind of evil). I work at the new tv stations in town - I'm part engineering part master control. So..basically, whenever I'm not controlling what goes on the air, I'm trying to fix what puts it there. :) Okay, not THAT much stuff breaks...often.

Cville suits me much better than The Burg (that just need a little "trademark" tm in there), except for the price of housing. :)

I live in a townhouse with two roommates and my two cats and one dog (roomie's), I've got a wonderful boyfriend whom I adore to no end. I try to paint and draw things. I like comic books, any kind of music except opera and chocolate pudding.

There, that's a pretty good nutshell, actually. (now why didn't I put that in my LJ bio?) :)
