I know lots of you have made this drive many times. I've appealed to Google and Yahoo, and I don't trust Mapquest, so...Charlottesville to Raleigh. Which way do you go, and how long should it take? The Yahoo directions are an hour and a half faster than Google's way, but I still don't think this can possibly be the best way.

So, which way do you go, and how long should it take a law-abiding driver to get to the North end of Raleigh from Charlottesville?

Thanks for your help.

Peace.

64 to 95 (make sure you take the little detour it suggest you do to get to 95 south withot going all the way through richmond. Its marked) then get on 85 south and then take US 1 into raliegh I think. I usually go to Durham so I get on 40 but you wouldn't want to do that.
It should take about three hours. course I speed like a devil on 95...

Okay. That's what Yahoo tells me to do (except it says 4 hours, ha). I think that's my plan.

Thanks:)

tajing the little detour around 95 save you a ridiculkous amount of time

oh god, taking 95 or 64 through Richmond would be asinine. I agree wholeheartedly.

Bear in mind that 95 is full of trucks. Then again, so is 29, so maybe I should stop talking. ;-) But my way *also* takes about four hours if you do the speed limit, so they're probably about equivalent.

(My family is a big fan of avoiding interestates. I don't really know why, it's just what they do.)

And no, Yahoo isn't on crack, they could probably just be sued if they gave *real* times that involved going over the speed limit.

Oh wait...Yahoo *is* on crack. Just not for that reason.

;-)

I was thinking 29 would be the recommended route, but I'm the opposite of your family - I prefer interstates. So if it's all the same, I'll go Yahoo's way, I guess.

and yahoo's on crack

and is the little detour 288? I heart 288. If you're going south on 95, I think it's probably better than 295 all the way around, although they may be about equivalent otherwise.

Is this 288 business well marked?

From: [identity profile] robinhoodvandal.livejournal.com
yes very
it will say TO 95 SOUTH on the sign. its right before you get to richmond. I just look for the to 95 sign which is why I didn't know the numbe rof the road off hand
it was built specifically to get you between 64 and 95

For a moment I thought you meant "288 Business" (as opposed to bypass) and I was like "There's no such road! It never touches a city!"

It's a funny shaped road number, though. You know how US 29 has that little sherrif's badge, and Interstates have the red-and-blue business? 288 has...well, it looks like a guitar pick, point down. That's the closest thing I can think of. Like a rounded triangle. Or like a rounded Tri-Force! :-D Hahahaha.

If I recall correctly, the 288 South exit off of 64 is *just* after the 295 Richmond Beltway Thingy exit. But don't quote me on that--check a map to be sure. It might be just before, instead.

no it's just before. you get off where it says 288 south to chesterfield. you would only have to be on 95 for a few miles before you hit 85. richmond to raleigh is about 3 hours, so maybe 4 hours that way from cville. i dunno how long 29 takes.

When I go to Durham, I take 29 straight down to Danville, bypassing all major cities, and then get on 85 all the way to town. There might be a road in between these two, but I don't think there is. It's been a long time since I've done it.

Never been to Raleigh, but I understand it's very close to Durham.

Good luck/have fun!

oh I've gone this way. it takes me about 45 minutes longer...

Yeah, all the stoplights can really throw a monkey wrench into your plans.

If Raleigh is east of Durham, that could also explain it..

yes raleigh is east of durham. just watch your speed in NC. the state cops there are dicks when it comes to out of state people.

It always depends on how bored they are.

Since I live in Durham, I'm not much help about getting to Raleigh from the North. Raleigh is southeast of Durham and your destination is in the northern part of town. Since you won't be in time for the evening session, a little give or take on the travel time shouldn't too terrible.

See you Friday!
