It's been a long day.

We have a new intern at work, and another one starting tomorrow. My boss asked me to keep an eye out for anyone I think can do the customer service part of my job, because he wants me to focus on other things from now on. He was not terribly specific, but I spent the afternoon with Kevin training on more portfolio-picking tactics, so apparently market analysis is what Vic has in mind. The picking part isn't that difficult for me. It's the portfolio maintenance I don't think I'm ready for. But the boys seem to think it's time, so I have a feeling I'm in for a lot more afternoons like this one - sitting in a room furiously note-taking while watching the analysts do their jobs. It's not a bad gig, but I can't say it's the most fun part of my day.

After work, Brent and I played tennis, if you could call it that. I'm, well, I suck. I used to be good, but somewhere between playing everyday in high school and breaking my foot and having to learn to walk again, I lost my skillz. I did better than I thought I might, but I feel like it must've been a real drag for Brent to play with me. He's a good sport, though. Funny conversation at work the other day:
Me, to Brent: Wanna play tennis with me sometime?
Brent: Yeah, sure.
Me: Excellent! I've been looking for a tennis buddy ever since I moved back.
Kevin: I play a little tennis.
Me: Really? Great. You wanna play with me too?
Kevin: Sure.
Nate: Why don't you invite me to play tennis?
Me: Because you'll say no; you'd rather watch TV.
Nate: That's true.
Aww, Nate.

So anyway tennis was successful insomuch as it was exercise, and I am even more sore than I was this morning. I came home and did the ab workout that I did with Jen yesterday, and now I'm kicking back waiting for the Dbacks game to start. For some reason, Pittsburgh of all teams is giving them trouble this year. It would be nice to see them burst out of the gates in the first inning and never look back, but the '06 'backs seem to have a flair for the dramatic - 9th-inning comebacks and whatnot. As heartwarming as those comebacks are, I live on the east coast, three hours ahead of Phoenix, and I'd rather not have to stay up until 1am to see any offensive production.

At dinner tonight, my mom was reading the court order regarding my brother's custody of my niece. She chuckled at how specific it all was - I guess it seemed silly to her that so many things had to be spelled out like they were. But when I looked at it, it really upset me. Not that it was unfavorable to William, but all the spelling out is just a sign of how much of a struggle each and every aspect of my niece's parenting has been and will be. All I can say is that I love her tremendously and I hope she'll always know that. I mean, look at her!

In my brother's socks and shoes - so cute! It reminds me of a picture from William's baby album of him wearing our dad's underpants and cowboy boots. Like father, like daughter, sort of. (By the way, can anyone who knows my father actually picture him with cowboy boots?! I can't. But he had them at one time.)

And on that note...peace.
