I left Charlottesville for DC at 10am yesterday. The drive up was fine - no traffic issues, no police issues (probably because I wasn't speeding. I know - who is this girl?) and I didn't even get lost. I personally have never driven through DC, and as soon as I hit the town, I remembered that I could've parked at the fucking metro in Vienna and not had to deal with this shit, but too late for that now...I parallel parked (that's right, motherfuckers!) on the street and was in my cousin's apartment by 12:30. We caught up and shot the shit for a while, then decided on Mexican for lunch. Our crew for the day was me, my cousin Laura, and her betrothed, John Linn, who is always referred to by both first and last name. We ordered a half pitcher of Margarita for our table at lunch, but John Linn did not drink his equal share and I'm fairly certain Laura poured more for me than for herself...to misuse a common statement of my boss', I was totally jazzed by 2:30. We walked back to Laura's apartment loudly singing songs from Team America: World Police. I had drunkenness as an excuse - not sure what they'll blame it on. I mentioned that we were the assholes annoying the fuck out of everyone else on the street because we were having a good time. John Linn reminded me that being that asshole is a great feeling, and I shouldn't feel too badly about it. Good advice, I say.

We got to the fest just before Girlyman was set to go on. I found various friends of mine set up to enjoy the show and introduced Laura and John Linn to more people than they could possibly remember. But L and JL are coming to Falcon Ridge again this year, so they'll definitely get to see some of these folks again. And I haven't done an official FRFF countdown anytime soon - but it's less than two months away! (Team America tune alert!) Falcon Ridge, FUCK YEAH!

After the show, we loitered for a bit, but then headed for Bethesda, where we'd fandangoed (or the equivalent of fandango as sponsored by some other website) tickets for An Inconvenient Truth. This is Al Gore's new documentary on global warming. I consider myself a well-informed environmentalist, but I cannot tell you how many times I saw something that made me go "Oh my god!" This film was terrifying in what it showed, but hopeful in that Gore provided several reasonable ways to get the planet back on track. Basically like, yeah, we've fucked up the planet considerably, and if we keep at it, humans will starve themselves to death in our lifetime. But it's fixable, motherfuckers! Now get out there and spread the fucking word!

Like the good little hippies that we are, our response was to come home and bust out some guitars. John Linn began formulating a song about the film, which I am confident will be wonderful when it is finished. Once satisfied with his night's production, he brought out his Woody Guthrie songbook and started strumming. I sang "Song of the Gypsy Davy" with him, which is a song I've heard Arlo perform but had forgotten about completely over the last couple of years. Now I MUST ACQUIRE A RECORDING. Actually, I have a recording of Arlo singing it at FRFF 03, on a minidisc...somewhere. Jer? If you know where this is, I have an itch for it. If not, I'll buy a copy somehow.

Today I'm headed back to the fest sans cousins to check out Mike and Robbie, then I'll be heading back to Cville.

Oh yeah, I guess I didn't mention it because it felt like stating the obvious, but Girlyman rocked the house yesterday! I think "Joyful Sign" is my new favorite song. I said that about "St. Peter's Bones" when they came out with that one, too. Love.

Peace.

RE humans starving themselves to death--Go read "Pastwatch: The Redemption of Christopher Columbus," by Orson Scott Card. Excellent alternate-history book.

I really tend to favor the more upbeat stuff. I love all of the new material, but Joyful Sign and St. Peter's Bones are in a close race for my favorite.
