I went to bed last night before any of the election results were final. Judging from last year's gubernatorial races in VA, I knew it would be a close race, and I decided to sleep it off and just find out in the morning. Well.

I'm generally pleased, and I'm not surprised by any of the results so far. All of the incumbents in VA held their House seats, but it looks like Webb pulled off the victory over Allen. Of course, there's no way Allen will concede until after a recount - out of 2.3 million votes, Webb is up by just over 5000 - less than a quarter of one percent. But in a state that's about 70% Republican...that's kind of a huge victory. Seriously. So here's hoping it holds up. And also that we find out within the week. Cause that'd be nice.

I'm not happy with the marriage amendment passing, but I do feel like it's only a matter of time before the ACLU sues the state over that one, and I'm confident it won't be in the constitution long. I think homophobia and anti-Islam are just the hottest trends in hate right now, and they will eventually give way to something else people will love to hate. Hopefully, the next generation of Virginians will study this era in history with as much disgust and confusion as I learned about segregation in the early 20th century. The wounds won't all have healed by then, of course, but I certainly hope that the attitudes will have changed on the grand scale.

In a weird way, I'm really proud of my state for being one of THE deciding factors in the Senate - here's hoping Virginia comes through the way I voted....

Peace.

I always heard growing up that "Virginia is for lovers!" I guess we can strike that slogan, but bridge players prove that "Maryland is for crabs." Regardless, "I [still] like calling North Carolina home."

Yeah, let's talk about that.

Since the game starts in the AM and it's a longish drive for you, do you want to come to Charlottesville and spend Saturday night at my [parents'] place and talk strategy? We can drive to Lexington and back in one car and I don't believe that route puts you out of your way any. Does that suit you?
