Nov. 27th, 2006 02:20 pmI woke up before 6am again today, and I finally realized what is wrong with me. I'm not getting enough yoga. The only yoga studio that I know of in town is a hot yoga studio, and I have enough trouble as it is just sitting in a sauna. No chance I'll be able to exercise in one. But then Erin directed me to Studio 206, which is apparently right down the street from my office.
I was browsing their list of classes, and they have one called Feel Good Yoga, taught by Joy and Cooch. I am definitely taking that one! :) So, after browsing their website, I decided to ask for an 8-class membership card for Christmas. So if you're keeping score, the things I've asked for this year are yoga classes, and more sessions with my personal trainer, both of which I'll buy for myself if my parents drop the ball. I've also dropped hints about a griffin for the old iPod. I hate asking for things, but I guess since my family isn't going to not buy me things, they might as well know what I want. I also want my mom to lay off and stop being so wretched, but I don't think I've been good enough this year to ask Santa to go to such great lengths for me.
Things I have to buy myself this holiday season:
new computer (the one at home is really pissing me off with its suckage)
new mattress (have a bed, do not have a mattress.) I'll need some bedding, too.
new homeowner's insurance (the most fun purchase on my list)
...and I'm starting to seriously consider getting rid of my car and getting a Vespa. I'm not sure yet if this is a good idea, but several of the folks in my building ride Vespas to work and it just seems like it'd be so much cheaper. Would I be able to make do without a car of my own, though? Would renting one for long trips be more cost effective than owning one? Would my folks let me use theirs if I'm hard up? Honestly, I figured this was a long shot at first, but the more I consider it, the more I want to give it a shot. I'm not terribly attached to my car, anyway.
I was talking to a friend about the difference in the cost of living between Charlottesville and Harrisonburg. In Charlottesville, the living wage is over $10/hour, whereas it's just $7.50/hour in the burg. We were discussing what could possibly make Charlottesville $100/week more expensive than the Valley, and the number one difference I could come up with was gas prices. Gas is so much more expensive here, and if you don't live right in the city (which I will very soon), you do a lot more driving than you do in the burg. Not that I pay anywhere near $100/week on gas, but I bet I would save a lot of dough if I weren't driving. And how little driving is little enough to justify getting rid of one's car?
So that's what's on my mind lately. I should focus my attentions on something more here and now for a while.
Peace.

Date: 2006-11-27 11:41 pm (UTC)However, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not EVER drive it on a 45-mph road. EVER. You will slow down cars, and they will all be angry at you, and angry drivers cause wrecks and you might die because motorcyclists are way less protected than car riders.
I know that sounds a little far-fetched and ridiculous, but please consider all aspects of this thing. I know we've talked about the goddamn suicidal bikers on 743 before...taking a Vespa out to Crozet would be the same thing, but worse, because Vespas aren't passable on non-dotted-lines the way bikes are. (I think technically not even bikes are legally passable on solid lines, but I'm talking realities here, not laws.)
I hardly need to remind you what the average AlbCo citizen thinks the speed limit is. ;-) (Hint: Even I drive 5-10 over, and I'm defensive to the point of causing accidents myself. Although I am getting better.)
So. For your own good and everyone else's peace of mind, consider taking the bus/free trolley instead!

Date: 2006-11-27 11:43 pm (UTC)p.p.s. Also you can't really get groceries effectively in a Vespa. Although I guess I never buy too terribly much...let me amend that to "you'll have to plan your grocery shopping carefully and efficiently by weight not prices."

Date: 2006-11-28 12:26 am (UTC)I'm more than likely going to have a roommate in my new place, too. I'm trying to think about how much I can bum rides when needed...it's actually probably unlikely that I'll ditch my car. But I kinda want to.
PS - Did you get my email about DI videos? I want to show our skits to my new team, but I don't have a copy of them. Jr. and Sr. years are what I'm interested in. When I told them about what we did, they all said "Oh! We've heard of you! You guys are famous!" :)

Date: 2006-11-28 12:23 am (UTC)I'll have to check the bus routes (I hear they're difficult to decipher in this town), but certainly if there's a convenient bus from my place to the office, I'll take it as much as possible and maybe just park my car for a while. I don't know. But I think you can get Vespas that go relatively fast...though this was one of my concerns. I really need to look into it. Right now I'm still just in the thinking about it stages.

Date: 2006-11-28 12:53 am (UTC)Thinking about it and planning for it are definitely a good thing! (And that's not something I can argue myself about!)
I'll check about those videos. Yay us being famous!

Date: 2006-11-28 06:39 am (UTC)My apartment in the burg, which was a steal, was only 300/month. Even my friends were only paying 450-500 at some of the complexes. Here, i have to have to even THINK about affording to live here.
And Staunton I found was cheaper than the Burg, too.
I think all your presents sounds like good suggestions. Mom kept asking me, and I finally gave her some generic ideas, because half of what I want is online and they don't do the interweb...
