A homeowners' association in southwestern Colorado has threatened to fine a resident $25 a day until she removes a Christmas wreath with a peace sign that some say is an anti-Iraq war protest or a symbol of Satan.

REALLY?!

And the HOA president fired all the members who refused to ban the wreath (apparently all but himself).

Seriously. I hate people sometimes.

Peace. (I don't mean that to be divisive.)

Um, wow. I thought peace was pretty much a universal seasonal theme. And here I thought the Winter Solstice cards I am planning to send out would be controversial and offensive to my relatives because they wish peace and joy on, you know, the wrong event... it didn't even occur to me that anyone would object to the peace part.

Remind me never to live anywhere with a strict home owners association.

Nah, it's not people, it's HOA's. I have an utterly irrational, deep-seated hatred of them and I don't even know why.

This does not stand me in good stead for a few years down the road...

HOA's are generally a pain to deal with, but they have value and I'm glad they exist. I've always had an HOA, and I never had to worry about the snow getting plowed or the roads being paved or anything like that. In my new place, the HOA will take care of all the outside maintenance, and I could give a crap what they won't let me display outside. As long as no one can put up signs, it doesn't bother me that I can't. The Massanutten HOA was a little too strict for my liking, but it really didn't affect me terribly.

However, if you read this article, it really is about a person being an asshole. The rest of the HOA committee tried to stand up for the peacenik, and they all got fired for it. HOA or not, that guy is a dick.
