Mar. 29th, 2007 08:49 amMy interviews went well yesterday, and I'm actually starting to look forward to this whole having an intern thing. I have one more coming in today, but before that, I have an interview of my own. My mom and I are going to be on TV this afternoon talking about bridge in the area and trying to promote our tournament this weekend. We get two minutes of airtime, and knowing my mom, she'll use the whole two minutes to answer the first question she's asked. So I guess I'll still have 13 minutes of fame left after today.
Ahren and I have been trying to strategize for the swiss game this Sunday. Our teammates are both novice players, but they study hard and are probably the best players at their level in our area. However, given the strats as they are on the flier, we're going to be flight A because I have too many points, so that means the pressure is on to win the whole event. We were thinking that we might have a better shot of it if Ahren played with Gail and I played with Patrick. Ahren and Gail have played quite a bit together, and Patrick and I have played once or twice. The downside to this is that we won't be using special conventions at either table. The upside is that both tables would have one stronger player. Thoughts?
Anyway we wanted to test out these partnerships, so Ahren is playing with Gail tonight in the club, and I was hoping to play with Patrick, but he's not available. So I'm playing with my mom tonight, Patrick on Friday night (the first night of the tourney), Ahren doesn't know who he's playing with tomorrow night (hopefully Gail but she may not be available), and then Ahren and I are playing together all day Saturday. My mom doesn't play any of the conventions that I like, and I don't play any of the conventions she likes (read: Flannery), so tonight should be fun.
Jay pointed out to me that I'm one of few players that won't be scambling for silver points to make life master. The only thing that's uncertain is my black points - depending on my membership status, I may or may not need 37 more of them, and I have no way of checking this. Technically, my membership lapsed in the early 2000's, meaning I should be required to get 50 blacks to make LM, but I think one of my director friends did something so that it shows that my membership never lapsed, in which case I don't need any black points for LM. According to the ACBL, this is what I've got right now:
Color Total YTD Prior
Platinum0.00 0.00 0.00
Gold 0.00 0.00 0.00
Red 34.95 0.00 34.95
Silver 55.04 19.28 35.76
Black 13.14 0.93 12.21
Online 30.01 19.88 10.13
Ace/Clubs 0.93
Our club director dude is way behind on reporting points - I actually have about 5 more black points than that shows right now, if he ever reports them. I'm hoping to pick up a few gold points in Gatlinburg, and have my 25 required by the end of the summer. We'll see.
Emily came over last night and we taught her a little bridge. I was surprised that having been around the game as much as she was as a kid, she knew nothing about it. But we started the ball rolling and hopefully she'll be willing to keep going with it.
Also, Ahren kicked my ass at tennis. I'm still way better than he is, but I was still too sore yesterday. Oh well.
Peace.

Date: 2007-03-29 02:36 pm (UTC)Re: Conventions:
Here's a list of the conventions necessary to win a Regional Open Pairs:
Takeout doubles
Stayman
The rest is just fluff that will add maybe 1% to your game, if your stupid partner doesn't screw them up. Cardplay and judgment are where the real game is.
Re: Partnerships:
I'm facing a similar situation this year with Richard and Anne. The question is, would yu expect the two of them together to lose 5 imps per match, or 20? If 5, you should probably keep them together, and let you and Ahren shock'n'awe them at the other table, while keeping them totally in their comfort zone. If twenty, splitting them is probably right. Of course, if the goal is learning more than winning, it's definitely good to have two expert-bunny pairs.
Looking forward to seeing you and AA soon.

Date: 2007-03-29 02:47 pm (UTC)It's hard to judge how they'll perform, given that it's an NLM tourney. We have lots of solid almost life masters in our local scene, but I'm better than most of them (or all, on a good day), and Ahren can certainly hold his own against these pairs, too. I guess if we're playing against the real n00bz, we'll play with our regular partners, and if we get thrown up against someone good, we'll switch it up. Sound good?
