The Sensitive Ego of a Sixth Grader
Apr. 25th, 2007 08:09 amConfession.
When I was in middle school, I was separated from two of my best friends, Katie and Kathleen, because I was in 6B and they were in 6A. Basically there were so many of us that our middle school had two "teams" and you only have classes with teachers in your team, meaning I had no classes with these two buddies of mine. I had the better teachers, but they got to be together, and I was jealous. They got closer and I kinda drifted away. To maintain contact, I would write them notes - especially to Kathleen, because she wrote back to me.
After our buses (spell check says this is the plural of "bus" but I still want to write "busses") picked us up from the middle school, they'd drive up to the high school to pick up more kids before driving everyone home. Kathleen's bus always parked next to mine, so we would open the windows and talk to each other that way, and pass our notes back and forth at this exchange. One seventh grader on my bus, Nicki, always made fun of me for this. She called Kathleen my girlfriend. Granted, Kathleen and I kissed each other like 40 times in elementary school, but I was a lot more uptight then than I am now, and I did NOT want any gay rumors spreading around.
One day, as I was getting on the bus, Nicki said "Oh here's Meg, everyone's favorite homo sapien."
You see what's coming next, don't you?
"I AM NOT A HOMO SAPIEN!"
Peace.
