I love the Free Speech Monument in Charlottesville. I love reading it, and I love that I can write on it. But whenever I want to write something, I am always struck by incredible writer's block. I mean, there's only but so much space. What to tell the world in one anonymous sentence. It's hard not to be cliche at a time like that. So today I decided, well, I'll just be a nerd. In big yellow letters, I scrawled 7NTXX.

And it's totally nerdy, but only the nerdiest of nerds will get it. Awesome.

My brother's getting hitched tomorrow. Hot damn!

Seven No Trump, Redoubled.

Biggest bid in bridge (7 NT), doubled (opponents call bullshit), and redoubled ("oh yeah?"). Requires two killer hands (or just one sickening one), and some talent ('cause they only double if they think they can stop you--so they've gotta have something to play around).

Sure, but it's not as dangerous.

Ahren made 4 on 1NTXX against the highest pair in our club for +1960 a few weeks ago. I was a passed hand with 11 points. It went like this:
P - P - 1NT - X
XX - P - P - RHO asks Ahren what my redouble means, and Ahren says that we don't have an agreement, but he thinks it means I'm happy here, so RHO passes, assuming I probably meant it as a "RUN!" bid. I guess he should've trusted Ahren a little more.
