I saw Sicko on Friday night with [livejournal.com profile] oobermeister and [livejournal.com profile] mczen. Ahren keeps asking me why I would go to movies that just piss me off. The way I see it is that it pisses you off for a reason - it's a call to action. It seems like a universal healthcare system is a tall order for our government, and it's disheartening to think how long it might take, but it's certainly a good thing to have at the forefront with the 2008 elections coming up.

The bridge weekend wasn't as successful as I'd hoped, but it was alright. Ahren and I thought we'd had a pretty lousy game, but in fact we were first in C our direction, so we picked up .85 for that. I played with McKenzie int he second session and had an inconsistent but mostly good game. We were first going into the final round, but I spazzed and cost us a zero to drop us all the way down out of the overalls. We still got 1.00 for placing in our section, but I was bummed.

McKenzie and I went to a concert that night in Norfolk - Yonder Mountain String Band at the Norva. I'd never seen the band before, but I was really looking forward to it because they're McKenzie's favorite, and we tend to have similar tastes. The band was really good and I was definitely into them, but I wasn't very fond of the venue. The show didn't start until 9pm and by then I was already exhausted...I lasted through the first set, but was crashing hard by intermission. I felt horrible about it, but we ended up leaving at intermission. The first set had been 90 minutes. I knew I wouldn't make it through another 90 minute set. I still feel awful that we left early - I know McKenzie didn't want to.

Ahren and the two of us had a room at a Williamsburg motel that night, but none of us got much sleep for various reasons, and it didn't look good for our team going into the Swiss. We drew a pretty solid B team for our first match, and on the second hand, I'm looking at something like:
Qx xxx T9x Kxxxxx. There may have been one more honor card in there somewhere but for the most part it looked like that. The bidding went something like 1S (on my left) - 2D - 4D (alerted as a splinter) - P - 4S (or 4N, can't remember?) - 5C - 5H - to me...6C it is! It got whacked and passed around, so McKenzie was playing 6C doubled, white vs. white. I figured hey, we've got a double fit, so we're not going down too much...they cashed the heart ace on trick one, and after a few more plays, McKenzie claimed the rest for +1090. I felt really, really good about that until a few hands later when the opps bid and made a vulnerable 7NT. The hand was cold, but the question was would our teammates have the guts to bid it? Gail was sitting in the deciding chair, and she's the least experienced of the 3 of us. I had my doubts. Luckily, when it came time to compare, we learned that she had in fact gone for it, and we ended up blitzing the match. Yay, right? Um, not so much. We went on to get kicked around for the next three matches, we won match 5 by a small margin, and would've won the 6th if not for an idiotic but brilliant (and completely accidental) call by an old fogey at our table. He'd intended to open 3D, but when he pulled 3H, he kept us out of our vulnerable and cold 4H contract, whereas he's white and only down 5. Win 9 for the bad guys, and we ended up losing the match by 1. Fuck 'em. So it was a really frustrating day, and by the end of it, we were all tired and a little cranky, and Ahren had a fever. I couldn't get to bed fast enough last night.

I'm bummed because we didn't come close to the 8 masterpoints McKenzie still needed to get his GLM, which wasn't even a big deal to me until he started telling me he wanted me to be his partner for that milestone. Oh well. I'll be there for Diamond, and hopefully Grand...:)

So that was my weekend. It wasn't bad, but it was a little discouraging. Oh well. Back in the saddle starting Saturday in Lexington. No club games for me this week. :( For now...work.

Peace.

on an unrelated note...when you changed watch links at your old job, did you do it for free, or did you charge far out the ass?

Yay universal healthcare! (Though I'm only 100% sold on universal healthcare for children. That is just required. Adults, I think, we as a society have less responsibility for. Not none! Just less.)

Man. It's been a while since I've posted anything really evil on my journal. Hmm...
