Jan. 25th, 2008 12:39 amI'm in the Portland airport right now waiting to take off on the 10:40pm to Atlanta, followed by a 4 hour layover and then a 2 hour flight to Bermuda. Once we get to Bermuda (whose websites all end in .bm - heh), we take a cab across the country to our hotel. It's a small country, so this wouldn't be a big deal, but they have a national speed limit of 20mph. Lame.
I am not afraid of flying, at least not that I'm aware, but I think I have some general travel anxiety issues. I'm not worried about this trip, except for the possibility that I will get sick. And I worry about getting sick so much that I make myself sick. I'm feeling really iffy right now and wishing that I'd worn sweats instead of jeans, but it's too late to do anything about that now. I took a precautionary immodium after dinner, and I'm sorta wishing I'd made myself poop more before I did that, because I can feel my full stomach now and I'm afraid that's not going anywhere for a few days now. It's amazing how one little pill can keep you from shitting for a whole week. I wonder about the lives of the people who researched that. Did some hospital offer a fellowship for people who would spend ten years developing ways to keep the body from expelling waste? I'm thinking yeah, at some point, it was somebody's lifelong dream to develop the anti-shitting wonder drug, and this person must have been an interesting dude or dudette. Maybe I'm being too liberal with the word "interesting," but it's a funny thought.
I finished Atonement today, and then went to see the movie. The book was good, but it bothered me a lot, and the movie was true enough to the book that I was okay with it, though there were lots of things left out, and little details that I wouldn't have picked up on at all had I not read the book. I don't think I'd recommend the movie, though, and I don't really get what all the buzz is about. I can see Oscars for costumes and makeup, but I don't think I would give the director a whole lot of praise, and while I think Keira Knightly played a great Cecilia, no one actor in this film had a large enough role to warrant a best actor/actress nod. I'm not sure what nominations it actually got, I'm just saying... It was entertaining enough, but it was mostly just okay. McKenzie didn't like it.
I left the bag that had all my new books in it either at Dave's or Joel's this week, so I didn't have any reading material when we got to the airport. I picked up The Innocent Man at a newsstand here, figuring I should read some Grisham since Charlottesville has just been soiling its shorts all over his existence for years now, but I'm not sure it's actually the type of book I can stomach. Just in case, I also have a copy of Pride and Prejudice, which is due for a rereading anyway. But I was hoping to read one of the eleventy million new books I'd bought while I was here. Ah well.
Time to go pack up my computer and wait for the nice lady to call for zone 7. This time tomorrow I'll be in Bermuda:) Asleep in Bermuda...
Peace.
