When Z and I hit the road back in December, we decided to cancel our Comcast cable internet subscription at home.  Why pay for it when we won't be home anyway, plus, it was giving us giant headaches and as far as we could tell from our experiences with the company, the customer service office is run by gorillas.  Unfriendly ones.  But we wanted internet options for while we were on the road, and also the spurts while we were home, so we purchased a wireless internet plan from our cell phone company, Sprint.  We got this little USB thing that we plug into the computer and it gives us a broadband connection.

When we signed up, we were told it's "almost as fast as cable."  Ha.  Really, it's almost as fast as my old 2400 bps AOL 2.0 connection from 6th grade.  It's miserable how slow this connection is.  But it's better than nothing, and we need something, and it's not worth reinstating our regular cable internet just for the 1 or 2 weeks every month that we're actually home.  So we're keeping the broadband thing and passive-aggressively sending angry vibes toward Sprint, but otherwise shrugging our shoulders and dealing with it.

It's hard for me to get work done, because the posts I write require pictures, and searching for pictures and downloading and uploading and editing them on a slow connection is like watching grass grow.  But yesterday I found out that my homeowners association clubhouse has free high speed internet, so now I'm sitting at a table in our clubhouse doing some work.  This means I can't work naked anymore, but at least I can work, and I'm cool with that.  I'm sitting at a conference table writing about sex today while some kids who have the day off school channel surf on the big screen TV in the next room.  This is a pretty sweet clubhouse.  I should spend more time here.  But that won't happen, because I'm not spending much time in town at all.  Oh well.

My buddy Wayne took the day off work today to hang out with me and should be getting here soon.   It's pretty yucky outside, so I don't know what we'll do.  We were gonna go on a hike, but that's out.  It doesn't look snowy or icy out there, but walking up the hill to my place last night, the grass was coated with a thin sheet of ice, which made my efforts to climb up the hill pretty comical.  There was talk of going bowling...who knows:)  I'm just excited to catch up with folks.  You know, before I take off again.

Peace.

it's probably "almost as fast as cable" only if you're in a spot that gets really good reception

I always have all the bars. It's just that they like to lie.

Anyway I meant to ask you before if you were interested in coming to a show at the Gravity Lounge on Friday night. It's a Vaudeville-style washboard band called the Wiyos that I love. I think maybe you came and saw them with me once before?

My husband and I considered the Sprint mobile broadband because of their commercials and all. But thankfully, when we actually went into the store to talk to the guy about it, he was brutally honest with us and let us know that most of the time, it's as slow as dial up and that it is only infrequently as fast as cable. Glad we didn't purchase it. We have the Comcast cable internet now and have been happy with it...but I can agree that the customer service folks seem to be gorillas.
