Apr. 27th, 2008 09:27 amWhen we got to San Antonio yesterday, we were both pretty hungry, so we decided to drive into town and find some Mexican, 'cause Mexican food in Texas has gotta be good, right? As we drove into the downtown area, we noticed there was some sort of street fair going on, and people were lined up all over the roads for a parade. We decided to check it out, but we parked far away just to be sure our car wasn't blocked in by the festivities. We found a delicious Mexican joint called Casa Rio, and when we walked in for lunch at 3:30pm, the place was totally packed. Deservedly so, as it was delicious. It had the best margarita I've had in a long time.
We did part of the River Walk, and decided to come back on Monday to see the Alamo before our flight out in the evening. We called our friend Greggles, who lives here and agreed to put us up for the weekend, and got directions to his house. He and his wife Patty live in a beautiful little neighborhood just outside the really congested parts of town (though for a big city, the congestion isn't bad), and they have a great house. Greggles is a bridge friend, so seeing him at home is like seeing a teacher outside of school -- it's sort of bizarre. He taught us how to play Guitar Hero, and after totally eating shit the first time each of us tried it, we caught on fairly quickly and it ceased to be terribly frustrating.
After a few hours of this, we went out to another Mexican restaurant called El Jarro, I think, and it was really good as well, but the margaritas there were way too strong for me, so I gave mine to Patty, who downed it like a champ.
Since I wasn't able to take the margarita at dinner, Greg offered up some at-home intoxication instead, and then we played Wii bowling. I was so trashed by then that I could barely stand up, and I was so dizzy, and yet was like 100x better at Wii bowling than I'd been last time I played totally sober. I still lost, though, but bowled a respectable 155 or something like that.
Then we came to bed and had a wonderful sleep in Greg's guest room. In an hour or so, we'll leave to see Rod Picott and Slaid Cleaves in Gruene, TX. The show starts at noon and goes until 8pm. There are some opener-type acts, but the advertisement said that both Rod and Slaid will play 3+ hours. That's going to be a great show, and I'm really excited about it. I just hope there's comfy seating...
Then tomorrow we fly up to Portland, and I'm very excited to be going back to what is quickly becoming my second home. I've missed it very much, and I'm looking forward to seeing all of Z's family again.
Peace.
