Jun. 25th, 2008 11:53 amIt was 86 and sunny yesterday when I set out on my bike ride. The only place I know to get on the trail is about a half mile in the wrong direction, but what's another mile? So I bike for about a mile and a half and then come to the point where the trail has to cross a street in Medford. All of the other crossings just go under bridges, since the trail is by a creek and the bridges are there already, but for whatever reason, this one crossing actually crosses the street. And it's not well marked at all. I rode up and down Medford looking for the continuation of this fucker, and by the time I found it, I was already pretty tired. Not good. I still had 10 miles to go. It was hillier than I expected it would be, and really, really hot. I made it to the next town, then decided to call Z to pick me up. I'd only gone about halfway to Ashland, and I wasn't interested in doubling my efforts.
When we loaded the bike into the back of the van, Z noticed that the back tire was completely flat. Oh. Well that explains why it was so much harder than I thought it should've been. Including the morning ride I took, I did about 8 miles on the bike yesterday. I was pretty worn out by the end of it. I'll need to work up to the 12-mile ride. I'm not there yet, even with a good tire. But I'm proud of myself for trying.
My crotch is sore today from the bike seat, but I imagine that within a week or so of regular riding, I'll get used to it and it won't be a problem. When I was working on the bikes at the gym, that's about how long it took. I should probably get back into that, too, to condition my quads. Other than squats and lunges, I don't really know of any way to work the quads without gym equipment, and I hate squats and lunges. But I am trying to be harder on myself these days, so maybe I just need to do the damn things. But if anyone can offer up an alternative, I'd love to hear it. I guess wall sits sorta work the quads...I hate those, too.
I'm anxious about next week, because it's a bridge tournament and I'll have far less opportunity to work out. Sigh. If we have a really good tournament, I should make bronze next week, but we're only staying for the first five days, because Emily's getting married and the weekend is going to be a middle school/high school reunion of sorts -- the really really good kind where only your favorite people show up! Then I get to be home for a few days, clean house, get things ready for the new roomie, then take off for NYC, Vegas, and Falcon Ridge. Yay:)
Peace.
