I am procrastinating!
Jun. 25th, 2008 05:14 pmYesterday on NPR they were interviewing people at the Senior Center in Charlottesville about the upcoming presidential election. I got all excited for my li'l hometown (where I used to play bridge, even!), but then I listened to the interviews, and I noticed something.
The media keeps coming back to the same points in this election: race, gender, and age. One interviewer said something like "Well, I would vote for McCain, but I think he may be too old, so I'm voting for Obama."
Wait. Seriously. Why are you voting at all? Are you just trying to cast your ballot to predict the winner? Because it doesn't seem that you care about any issues.
Obama and McCain stand for very, very different things. Age, race, and gender (possibly a VP issue) should have nothing to do with this, or very little at the least. It's just so weird to me that people would change their vote from McCain to Obama just because they're afraid McCain might kick it in office. Or that they would vote (R) instead of (D) just to keep a black guy out of the presidency. Don't the candidates' platforms matter at all?
Sigh. I know they do, and I sincerely hope that most people actually are casting their votes based on real issues. But we sure have spent a lot of time talking about race, gender, and age compared to things like war, a failing economy, and global warming. You know, the stuff the president will actually have to DEAL WITH. Lordy.
I only wrote one post so far today, and it will go live tomorrow at 8am. And it is awesome, so I hope you'll stop by AisleDash and check it out, or remind me to link it or something. I really need to write something for PT today. I'm just not in a very productive mood. Maybe a long walk will help.
Peace.
