Jul. 1st, 2008 09:32 amMcKenzie and I are still a little jet lagged or something -- we decided to take the morning off and try to sleep in. He's sleeping in; I've stopped trying. We played two sessions of pairs yesterday. I felt like I played well on all but a handful of boards, and we scratched in both sessions, though didn't do anything spectacular. As we keep adding new things to our card (latest additions are fit showing jumps and carnage raises), I'm feeling stronger and stronger about our bidding, but it's still frustrating when something comes up and I have no idea wtf is going on. That happened a couple of times yesterday, and I felt like a doink, which I hate. Oh well.
One of my favorite little exchanges was against a pair of men, probably B players. I held something awful like Jxx Kxx Qxx AKQx and it went P-P-1C to me. That wasn't my exact hand but it was a bad balanced 15 count with the AKQx of clubs. So I overcalled 1N (all white) and got to play it there for down one. After the hand, my LHO asked our permission to look at the hands to see if there was anything they could've bid (yeah, 4S). McKenzie and I both requested that they wait until the hand records come out. LHO was incredulous, and said "What? It's not like we're in a hurry!" "No, but boards have a tendency to get fouled when you pull the cards out." "But we're only going to look at the E/W hands!" Why is this douchemonger arguing? Anyway, I left the table at this point (Z had already left). Why had he asked permission if he wouldn't respect our answer?
So when I come back, they're hovering near the table, basically gloating to one another about how that stellar defense had scored them a top board. Riiiight. I knew they were wrong, and I think they did, too, they were just being assmunches, and when the finals were up, whaddya know, they earned two big fat goose eggs at our table. Way to go, guys!
We'll play this afternoon again in the side game, but we're taking the evening off to have dinner with Kerry & Jill. It's also Jill's birthday -- Happy Birthday, Jill! -- so I'm more than happy to take a break from the bridge and celebrate another year of Jillness:)
This whole week is just going to be totally yayfun. Our team arrangements for the rest of the tournament are really swell, and then on Saturday I get to get my party on with my high school posse for Emily's reception, which is tres exciting. On Sunday we'll drop Helen off at the airport, then head southward for some outdoor enjoyment with Laura & friends in Lex Vegas, and then we go HOME. For a whole week! Woo!
And then after that week, I get to go to NYC and see my baby niece, then Vegas for a week, then Falcon Ridge. I didn't even know it was possible to cram that much awesome into two weeks. Rar!
Well this post is quite rambly, as tends to happen when I'm sleepy and excited. I'm off for now -- going to try to get a little more rest, and maybe even do some work.
Peace.
