Jul. 3rd, 2008 10:57 pmI've been at the bridge tournament 14 hours a day this week, so that's why you haven't seen much of me here...
Tomorrow's our last day at the tournament, then it's Emily's party on Saturday and Laura's hiking trip on Sunday.
The one thing that wasn't awesome today was that Z and I fell this morning. Just like the old people we are...we were in the bathroom and the floor was wet...he slipped and grabbed me for balance. We both fell backwards, away from each other. He hit his head hard on the corner of the marble sink fixture, and I hit my right elbow and left shoulder blade hard on the tub. I have a bruise across my whole back now, and it hurts to move my arms. Hopefully it's just a bruise and will go away soon. We were both knocked a little silly from it -- I was woozy until I laid down for a while and did some breathing exercises, but Z was a little loopy for most of the day, and he still says his head hurts. He says he doubts he has a concussion, but I'm afraid that both of us have injuries that are going to bug the hell out of us for a while. Suck. I can't sit back in a chair or move my left arm very much :-/
Oh well, I have happy things to occupy my mind, anyway.
Peace.
Z and I couldn't enter any KOs until today because our schedule was such that we couldn't commit to four consecutive sessions until today/tomorrow, so we'd only amassed a few points so far, mostly from winning the side game on Tuesday afternoon. The side game, aka where bad bridge players go to die.
We started the morning in bracket I of a compact KO with Kent and Geoff as teammates. We advanced easily through two 3-ways and managed not to draw Meckwell for the semi, so there's a shot we'll get to the final tomorrow. It seems unlikely that we'll win the event, but it would be cool to play Meckwell in the final...hopefully I don't have a nervous breakdown about it.
For the afternoon KO, we're at the top of bracket II. We won our first match (a 3-way) by a combined 3 million (give or take a few imps) and drew the team that won bracket II in the previous KO. So probably the toughest competition we'd face, but certainly not a better team than ours. We really belonged in bracket I, but I'm happy enough not to be there. Anyway, the cards were shitty in the first set. The opps were bidding on total shit -- opening balanced 10 counts, competing on dick all, and it just kept working for them. After some really horrible bridge, we were down 20 at the half. I was frustrated, but Z calmed me down. They were incredibly lucky using horrible methods that paid off in the first set, but it seemed unlikely that the luck would hold. After penalizing their first two hands of the second half, they tucked their tails and shut up. We bid NO games in the whole set, but won handily -- 46 to 12 in the second half, when we brought back 10 plus scores to match our teammates' 7. On one hand, we doubled 1N and set it a trick (red), and our teammates made 3 on the same hand. Heh:)
So after we compare, we're all shaking hands and patting each other on the back, and then one of our opponents comes up to our table with this shit-eating grin saying "You have us by 1?" Yeah asshole, that's why we're all celebrating. McKenzie went to their table to check the scores, and they'd conveniently neglected to score two of our swings. It felt really good to beat them, because the guy sitting North against us was SO PATRONIZING. When we left his table, I know he thought they'd held on, because the whole card was nothing but part scores and small sets. Our biggest score was +300, and we had missed one game after a misunderstanding. So he was all "Nice try, guys, it's gonna be close." Heh. No, it's not close. Send us a postcard from the side game.
One of my favorite wins ever.
