The Reston Regional continues on today and tomorrow, but Z and I played our final session there last night, winning our Bracket II KO.  Here's how it went:
Monday afternoon:  3rd our way in the charity pairs.  Kinda lame, but worth 1.80R.
Monday night:  51% in the side game: 0.69R.
Tuesday afternoon:  Side game win: 2G/1.19R or something like that
(finished 6th in side series overalls, worth 3.88 total -- so no extra masterpoints there, but turns them all gold.)
Wednesday morning/aft/eve:  Shitty day.  Three Swiss match awards only.  .33 each or something.
Thursday/Friday AM Compact KO:  Win Bracket I:  11.54G.
Thursday/Friday full KO:  Win Bracket II:  19.89G.

These masterpoints aren't exact, but it looks like we earned just over 38 in 12 sessions, including an entirely unproductive day on Wednesday.  So that's pretty good.  It would've been nice to break 40, but had we played more sessions, it seems we were well on track for 50+, which I've never done in a regional (or any tournament) before.  Maybe in Hunt Valley, though that seems unlikely, as I'm committed to a lower bracket KO for the first two days, I believe.

McKenzie says that 35 points per regional is a good goal to set for myself, but I'll be honest and admit that I'll be disappointed with fewer than 40 for a full regional -- even though I've only done that once.  But I've also only ever played a full regional once, so technically I'm one for one:)

But, then again, points schmoints, right?  I've always believed that masterpoints are no indicator of a person's actual skill, because anyone can amass thousands of them if they just play enough.  Still, winning lots of points all at once and making the tops of the masterpoint race lists does put your name on the radar, and that's certainly something I want for myself.

I reached my 2008 goal of making Bronze Life Master (500 total masterpoints) yesterday.  With nearly six months to go in the year, I will be able to get a nice head start on my 2009 goal to make Silver -- 1000 total.  I knew that I'd have to get a head start on that one this year, though, because 500 points in one year is a lofty goal for anyone who doesn't play full time.  The next step above Silver is Gold, at 2500 masterpoints, which I will almost certainly not reach within a year of making Silver; therefore, my goal from 2010 forward is simply to make the Barry Crane top 500 list each year.  I imagine I will finish this year somewhere between 700th and 1000th on that list.  Right now I'm not terribly far behind the cutoff for 500th place, but there's a huge chunk of people in there with me.  I also hope to stay in the top 10 on the junior list, but the summer nationals are usually huge for juniors, and I'll just be playing side games with a client there, so they'll all gain ground on me this month.

Anyway, regardless of what happens in my bridge career, I will always have the incredible memory of earning Bronze Life Master with a win over one of the best teams in the world, and I don't think that's something any non-client can say.  I will be riding that high for a long time.

Peace.

That last part is very true!

Also, they changed the point scale slightly so actually its a tad harder to win points than it used to be (last year), so I think 40 is a very respectable number, even playing KOs all week. You might want to ask Z if he notices that there's been a chance in the way points are awarded.

You did have a very nice week and huge win

It's still hard to win massive points without playing more knockouts, and you won both of yours.

I agree with David that knockouts offer fewer points now (unless you can consistently finish top two in bracket 1, in which case you might win slightly more points). In particular bracket 2 is not nearly the cash cow it used to be.
