Sep. 27th, 2008 01:01 amI've been on the go pretty non-stop for the last few days. Here's a quick update:
Drove up to Salem on Wednesday and fell promptly to sleep. Went to WW on Thursday. Lost another 2 pounds last week:) Yay. Hit the gym, lunch with Z's Grampa, then up to PDX to retrieve an oobermeister. We took him across the river so he could say he'd been to Washington, then we picked up Guitar Hero as a "present for Dave." We're staying with Dave for a few days and he has a Wii.
We picked up Ben in the early afternoon and went to a damn fine Indian restaurant just a few blocks from Dave's. I think that's going to be my place here in Portland. We all loved it. Then we hit up Rite Aid for batteries and wine. Heh. We got three bottles of wine, all less than $5. Last night we sat in Dave's hot tub and passed around a $3 bottle of Riesling. From Idaho. I'm not much of a wine connoisseur -- I can't really tell you what makes a wine good, and I don't have very sophisticated taste -- but that was some of the most awful pisswater I've ever tasted. Idaho really should stick to the potatoes. And I should probably stop buying wine at Rite Aid.
This morning, we slept in a bit and then headed out to Mount Hood. It was a little overcast, so we didn't have great views on the way there, though we could see Mount St. Helens across the river. It cleared up throughout the day, though, and by the time we were at the mountain, it was beautiful. We hiked for about 2 hours from Timberline Lodge @ 6000ft up to the Silcox Hut (though we did not take the Silcox Trail, which is the recommended route...) @ 7000ft. We were standing on thick snow at one point, but the weather was nice and the air was great. Danny took some pictures, which I'll steal from him once he gets home and gets them off his camera. I can't find my camera charger, so I didn't bother with mine. Danny got some great shots though.
Being there was an amazing experience for me. Being above the timber line really distorted my perception -- it seemed like the top of the mountain was really close, like we could just hop up there in a few minutes' time. Yet after 90 minutes of climbing, we'd only made it 1000 feet higher (we did a lot of winding around), and the top of the mountain was still nearly a mile higher than we were. It's beautiful there. I'd never been there before, of course, but I felt so at home. I'd go there every day if I could. It was like soul food.
By the time we got back off the mountain, it was time for the debate. We went to a friend's debate party in Vancouver with a bunch of other Obama fans gathered. I found the debate pretty boring, and at times infuriating, but I have to say I loved the deer in the headlights look on McCain's face when they asked him about Iraq. I also think that it was a clear win for Obama. Yes, I'm biased, but I just thought he was much better prepared, and actually sounded like he had some actual ideas. He didn't do nearly as much dodging as McCain did. It's not like my vote was going to change.
Now we're back at Dave's and we're going hot tubbing again in a few minutes -- we've got better wine for tonight. It was $4, and it's not from Idaho...
Peace.
