jianantonicHarvey and I were leading the 29-table open pairs yesterday after one session with a 65%. We felt pretty good about our game going into it, but things sort of unraveled in the second session. The first few boards, there was nothing we could do. The opponents just kept getting to exactly the right spots. We defended well, but it was still a little upsetting because I knew that others wouldn't be bidding as well. I kept my cool, though, and just focused. We were playing our cards well. Eventually it would pay off.
But that time never really came. For every good result we got, it felt like there were two bad ones. By the last round, I figured we'd be right around 50%. The one round to go scores had us at 52% -- not very good, but still good enough to place in the high overalls, and possibly win B, with a good last round. I knew that was shot, though, when our first auction went like this:

WTF? We had JUST talked, not three minutes prior, about fast arrival AND about how 3N is almost always better than minor suit contracts.
And here's the kicker: my diamond suit is QJx. I can't fathom a hand partner can possibly have for this bid that won't make slam. But we had JUST talked about fast arrival and how it was an absolute signoff opposite a limited hand. (And though I was limited to a 19-point MOOSE, I was still limited.) So I passed. And we were down 1, when 3N makes five every goddamn day.
So much for the event. Our last two boards were also subpar. We finished the event 9th overall and 3rd in B. We were both really disappointed.
We can't play open pairs today because I'm taking the evening off to go see Tracy Grammer in Hillsboro with my mother-in-law. Harvey might come, too. I think it's going to be a really fun evening. Since her set was cut short at FRFF, it's been ages since I've seen a real TG show. I miss her.
I'm bummed that I'll miss the VP debates, but I'm sure I'll be able to get the gist of it from the internet and all that. I hope that Biden can drive the final nail in the Palin coffin today. The polls are looking great. As of this morning, we've picked up Ohio and Florida, and NC is a dead heat. Go big blue!
