Today, like yesterday, is shaping up to be a slow, lazy day.  With bridge all day Sunday, I hadn't made it to the gym since Saturday, so I knew I  needed to go yesterday, but I just kept not going.  Finally, McKenzie helped peel me off my parking spot on the couch and I went.  Once there, my fatigue was no problem.  I worked out harder than I have in a long time, actually.  Of course, though, now I'm quite sore...sigh.

When I left the gym, there was a bright orange piece of paper on my and every other car in the very large parking lot.  There are few things in the world that piss me off more, mostly because wtf can I do about it?  What do you do when a business litters on your car?  I know I'm going to get that piece of paper to the recycling bin, but what about the hundreds of others?  I could go around the parking lot removing them all, which I often do, and sometimes I even work up the courage to call the number on the ad and bitch them out.  Yesterday's offender was Lincoln Mortgage of 2114 Angus Road, Suite 220, Charlottesville, VA 22901, (434) 979 0193, Lincolnmtg@embarqmail.com.

I do think it's illegal, so I went ahead and emailed the police department, just to ask if there's anything I can do about it.  I also sent an angry email to the company, but I feel like what they really deserve, and what I should have a right to do, is for me to take all my garbage to their office and leave it by their door.  Big bags of festering filth -- I mean, they left their shit on my property...

I think I get these car fliers more than most, too, because even when I'm at home, my car is in a big parking lot, and I get a lot of ads on my car when I'm home.  I should just start printing up invoices and billing people for "cleanup and removal."  Heh.

Anyway fuck you, Lincoln Mortgage.  And fuck you to anyone who thinks it's okay to advertise this way.  Everyone hates this.  No one will ever call you.  All you're doing is creating waste and pissing people off.  You're contributing to the downfall of the environment and global goodwill.  You suck.

Bah!  Done ranting now.  But you know, I didn't include all that contact info for no reason -- just sayin'.

Peace.

It seems particularly ironic in today's climate, too, that the offender is a mortgage company. I hate those flyers too, though luckily, we don't get much of it in my neck of the woods. Good on you for letting them know how you feel about it.

(a) If I had to guess, I'd say that I can't imagine what sort of criminal rule that would violate. For that matter, I'm unaware of what else about it might be illegal. (This is not intended as legal advice, nor as a statement of law)

(b) I imagine it must work, on the margin, or why would it still be so popular?

(a) Isn't it littering? If it's not illegal, it damn well should be. But I know the cops have better things to do...it just...argh! It's annoying.

(b) Well, I've never seen the same company do it twice. I think they try it because it's the closest thing to free widespread advertising they can get, and even if they do get a few calls, I bet they lose customers for this sort of thing, too.

Is sending somebody something in their mailbox (or, technically, newspaper box) littering? No. This is just another kind of direct advertising. A sucktastic one, but still.

And for (b) I expect it's like spam. Even if 1% of people respond, they still make up your expenses.

You pay for mail, though. And it is illegal to stick things in people's mailboxes. I have just always been pretty sure that this was illegal, but just one of those things no one ever actually prosecutes you for.
