Oct. 22nd, 2008 09:16 amHere's my review of my new computer over at The Perpetual Tourist. I'm pretty well pleased with that purchase, but I haven't completely moved all my computing from my big laptop to that one. I'm on my big laptop now, and Z is using the Eee. We both like it, and it should be enough for both of us when we're traveling, so that's great. I'm also going to buy a portable DVD player, because I looked at them yesterday and they're much less expensive than they used to be. Then we'll just have two little machines that take up less space than one of our laptops, and perform all the necessary functions just as well. Score.
One of my recent Gadling posts is on the AOL welcome screen today. I've stopped reading the comments on those, because for one thing it would take all day and I can't keep up. The other thing is that commenters who come from the welcome screen are NUTTY.
Something I read or heard the other day was about how the media doesn't really give us an honest portrayal of what people are like (maybe Girlyman said this at their show -- I can't remember whom I need to credit for this idea) and it's totally true. The media only really shows us the prettiest people in the world, or the ones that are most exceptional for some reason or other. It leaves us feeling like the average American is like something from a sitcom. Maybe a Joey or an Aunt Becky from Full House, and all young girls are Stephanie Tanners. Quirky, sure, but quite wholesome and happy, too. But the truth is that the majority of Americans have a lot of crazy in them.
I know I do, and I've been trying hard not to dwell on all the ways my own crazy has embarrassed me in the past. But just take a look at the comments on any of my especially widely-viewed blog posts and you'll see what I'm getting at. Or work in customer service for a little while, and see what kind of requests you get from people. Eventually you're going to start feeling like everyone is stupid.
Normal is a lie, folks. One big nutty illusion.
And now I am determined to go have a good day, in spite of the weirdos flooding my inbox, because I am sick of having bad days, and I've decided that today won't be one.
Peace.
