I think this is officially my best regional showing ever.  It's close, anyway, but with one day to go, I'm right at 50 points so far.  I'd like to get to the point where 50-point regionals are a disappointment rather than a personal best, but I'm trying to stay in my seat here...  We played bridge today the way it was meant to be played:  no more than 5 minutes per board.  We were out of the 1pm session by 3 and done at 9 with the finals, with wins in both sessions.  Tomorrow we're playing 4-handed in the Swiss, and our team played our most solid bridge of the week tonight, so that bodes well.  I'm looking forward to a strong finish, but can't be disappointed with our showing so far.

The playing site for this tournament is actually across the river in Vancouver, Washington, about a 20-minute drive from our place.  Z's been taking different routes each time to re-familiarize himself with the city and to give me an idea of what's where (though I'm so bad at directions and navigation, I may never figure this place out to drive without a GPS).  We've been rocking out to our Portland soundtrack (Red Elvises, Mountain Goats, Waybacks, and assorted others), and I've just been basking in the Oregon experience.  I'm so happy we're here.

When EFO's "Number Six Driver" came on our car stereo today, I got to thinking about Virginia and my identity.  I thought back to when I visited Ahren in Minnesota and all his friends called me "Virginia."  I like nicknames, and I loved that one.  I was only there for a few days, though, so it didn't really stick.  But I was thinking today about how I'd really like to go by Virginia.  As a nickname, not to completely replace Meg.  It's toolish to suggest your own nickname, though, so I'm not going to tell anyone to call me anything other than what they feel like; I'm just saying that if the folks in Oregon resurrect my Virginia nickname, I would be cool with that.  I like being known as the girl from Virginia.  I'm proud of my home and happy to be from such a wonderful place.  I would take it as a compliment to be associated with the state.  And Virginia was my grandmother's name, so there's that, too.

We lunched at Nicholas Restaurant with Z's parents this afternoon.  I'd missed that place, but even after looking forward to eating there again for months and building it up in my mind, it still exceeded my hopes and expectations.  YUM.  Z has promised to take me back to my favorite Portland Indian restaurant tomorrow for dinner.  It's been too long (almost 2 weeks!) since I've had real Indian food -- can't wait:)  Then Helen arrives on Monday and we'll do it all over again.  Rock on.

Peace.
