(no subject)
Sep. 14th, 2004 06:46 amIt's too early to be up, but my right nostril is acting all weird and I can't sleep because of it. It feels like someone shoved a pea up there, but really, it's empty. This is one of the most uncomfortable things ever. So I'm awake.
I start my job at Massanutten today. No, didn't quit ADF (yet). But, only a few of my coworkers and none of my supervisors know that I picked up this second job. So, SHH.
The thing is, I only took the job as a way to make a little extra cash to pay the bills. Jeremy picked up a lot more hours at Ruby's, we've got a babysitting job for Friday night - basically lots of little things to pool together for Mastercard. But anyway after talking to a lot of people who DO work up here, they're all telling me that if I don't move up in the ranks rapidly, they'd be surprised. It is a huge resort, and there are lots of job openings all the time. There are about 5jillion management positions, and I'm qualified for at least half of those. Plus 90% of the folks that work here are under 17 and have no prior work experience or much education. I have both, and I'm a friendly person (when you don't treat me like shit and even then I can pretend not to hate you, people at ADF, cough cough)). All the wine tasting people who've known me for over a year now say that I'll do really well here. So maybe there is a career in it after all - though I'm NOT putting all my eggs in this basket. I still want to teach (though not necessarily any more than I want to do this or that...) and plan to put in an application. At this point, honestly, it's all about the benjamins. Working on the mountain for slightly less money is OK because I don't have to put gas in the car nearly as much (10 mile drive to work vs. a 10 minute walk). I figure in gas alone, I'll save two gallons a day, which is like $3.50...in an eight hour day, that's a difference of almost $.50/hour. But factor in the wear and tear issues and it's even better.
So, time frame for quitting ADF? Probably January. I'll hold on through Christmas for a few reasons. 1) I will be in school and unable to work enough hours anywhere else to make as much money. 2) We're definitely getting some big bonuses between now and January. 3) If we can make a certain goal, which is very much within our grasp, we'll get the bonus of a cruise to the Caribbean. I probably won't take the cruise, but wouldn't mind trading it in for half its monetary value....
I will need courage to execute these plans in their entirety, but if work keeps going like it is, I'll need less and less.
Now that I've written all I can think to write, it's off to aimlessly surf the web.
Peace.
