Tonight Jer and I are going to Staunton to see a show called Woody. It's about Woodrow Wilson, perverts. My former guitar instructor wrote it - or the music, at least. Anyway tonight is friends and family night and he invited us. Tomorrow we will also be in that vicinity, but we'll be hanging out with Ben and Claire Josefson. :)
I had something very profound in mind to say when I began this entry, but I got caught up in Woody. Oh well. Maybe it will come to me. Probably not until I am far away from the computer, though. It always happens that way.
Emily at work left today for a two week vacation. That means that Janet doesn't take any days off between now and the end of those two weeks. I came *so* close to handing Randy my two weeks' notice yesterday, too. I was making my case for why Janet's no-profit diamond "sale" should still count toward our monthly goal, because after all I had made that sale anyway, for a profit, too, until the bitch got in the way. I don't think I've talked about this on here yet. Basically this guy wanted a 1.5 carat diamond, and he had some really tough to compete with price quotes with him. The next day was my day off, but not trusting Janet to do a good job, I gave him my cell number and told him I'd work on it for him on my day off. Janet, eavesdropping on the transaction, went back and called the only diamond vendor she knows - who, by the way, she won't let any of us call - only she can talk to him because she is "the one he has a relationship with." Well anyway, she showed me his quotes, and I told her thanks but no thanks, they're way too high (by like 4 g's) and I'd handle it. I did handle it. On my day off, I was making calls to vendors in NY, LA, all over, and I got two diamonds shipped overnight to the store for Friday that I could sell for $6500, making a 48% markup. Generally that's a low markup, but when it's a big sale like that, it's ok to dip a bit to make the sale. Some insight into jewelry - everything in the mall is marked up 4-5 times the price they paid for it. The things we carry are mostly a 3 time markup, except diamonds, which are more like 75%...not a huge margin but good enough that we make a lot of sales and don't lose money on them. (This may sound like a ripoff, but considering how much it costs to run a store, it's actually very reasonable). ANYWAY, I called the store to give them the heads up if this guy called that this is what I was getting in for him. Janet picks up and tells me she's already spoken to him, and she sold him one of her guy's diamonds, sight unseen, for $8000. She said she only got an 18% markup on it, but "that was okay because it's a huge sale." While I was doing my price hunting, Mike told me not to go below 50% if at all possible, but he didn't even ask her the cost on hers when he ok'd her sale. Miff! 18% is JACK SHIT! That won't even pay our insurance if we break it! Anyway, whatever, good job Janet, way to go getting us 8 grand closer to our goal. Then, Friday, her stone comes in. Her day off. She thought our cost was 6000, but it was $6000 PER CARAT and it was a 1.6ct stone! I don't have the numbers exact here, but the exact figure I do know is she sold it for $1507 BELOW our cost, NOT INCLUDING the fact that the guy financed it, which automatically takes 5% off (financing company's fee to us) AND tax which is another 5%! So anyway, I threw a shit fit at Mike. I yelled at him for about an hour about how NO ONE BUT ME should've handled that transaction because I'd already told Janet her guy's prices were too high and I'd handle it. And about how he told me I absolutely couldn't go below a 50% markup but she gets away with 18%! And how the only transaction that I've made that EVER lost the store money only cost us $51, but Janet loses us about $3000 (which you can actually add to the $2000 I would've MADE on MY diamonds) and she doesn't even get a slap on the wrist. GRR! So Randy got back from his show yesterday, and I talked to him about the situation. I asked if he was going to count the 8000 toward our goal. I argued that he should because if things had gone according to my well laid plans, we would've made that much, including a PROFIT. He said no. I said he should take it out of Janet's bonus but not punish the rest of us who worked hard for that sale, ie ME. He laughed. I said, OK, I'll stop bugging you if you tell me about the raise I asked for. "What do you think that extra 50 bucks was last week with your paycheck?" he says. "ARE YOU SERIOUS? Thanks for the charity but that equals out to a 33 cent raise for ONE MONTH - I was hoping for something a little more permanent? "Keep making your goals and you'll keep getting extra." THEN COUNT THE FUCKING 8000 DOLLARS THAT I DIDN'T LOSE! He settled it by assuring me I'd get at least a fifty cent raise by Christmas. Ugh I don't even plan to work anymore after Christmas. And the kind of raise that I think is fair is more like 2 bucks an hour. After all, I make an average of $50,000 a month for that store BY MYSELF. He could at least pay me $25,000 a YEAR! Fuck.
Ok now I'm all pissed. I have to stop before I have an aneurysm.
