The start of football season was a little quieter than I like it -- the VT game wasn't televised, so I had to watch it at home on the internet. And the bar that we went to for all the games last year is no longer in business, so the local hokie club won't get together until next week at the earliest. That was a bummer, but watching the game was as fun as ever.

There are lots of question marks about this season, because we have a lot of untested players, but holy crap, they looked amazing in this game. It was just against Appalachian State, an FCS school, but I've definitely seen Tech look worse against far worse opponents. By the end of the game, they had their 5th string in. The final score was 66-13, under 70 only because Frank Beamer is a classy guy and had his players take a knee at the goal line with two minutes to go. Based on the opener, though, there's a lot to be excited about this season. A lot of sports personalities have Florida State winning the ACC this year, but I don't think it's going to be a walk for them...

During commercial breaks in the game, I lifted weights in my living room and did squats and planks, then when the game was over, I went over to the gym for some cardio. I'm still not getting a lot of sleep, and don't have the energy for really hard workouts these days, but I did do 30 minutes on the treadmill and then another 30 on the bike. Most days I do something like a 10-15 minute warmup jog on the treadmill followed by 30 minutes of something lighter, but I'd like to get back to regular 30-45 minute runs. I just don't have the energy right now. I do feel like I'm in condition to do it, though. I haven't missed a day of working out in two weeks now, and I'm feeling pretty good about that. With all my travel and time in airports, it's difficult to really eat well (and, okay, I choose not to make a huge effort, because I really like egg and cheese biscuits and those happen to be available at most airports), but keeping up with my workouts has kept me from gaining weight, and some muscle tone is coming back in areas that I'd been neglecting. I'm sure I could tone up right nicely if I just cut the egg and cheese out, but I'm okay taking the slow road if it means I get to keep indulging.

I'm hanging out with my friend Shanon tonight -- we're buddies from WAAAAY back, and she just moved here. I think she's only here for a few months, but it'll be exciting to have her around and hang out some. I'm also playing welcome wagon for two more new Portlanders this month, and I'm very excited to welcome them to town :) I have to decide where I'm taking Shanon tonight -- there are millions of great happy hours, but she's busy cooking a baby, so no alcohol tonight. Maybe Voodoo, though... :)

VT has a really easy schedule this fall, which is good because they could come into the ACC championship game 11-0. Win that against a ranked FSU team and a NC berth seems probable. FSU also will have an easy time winning the division because they don't have to play VT in the regular season.
